Renata Adler New York Times There is not enough material for a two-minute bawdy skit. May 9, 2005 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times On the one hand, it's a lot better than you might expect, with scenes and lines of high comedy. On the other hand, it lacks the pure anarchy, the abandon, of Terry Southern's novel. Rated: 3/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The story proceeds as if made up on the spot with random visuals and without direction or purpose. Rated: 3/10 Aug 24, 2020 Full Review Robert Kotlowitz Harper's Magazine The joke, if it ever really existed, has gone out of Candy in her film embodiment. In its place is a long, dreary vaudeville, six or seven acts' worth. Aug 4, 2020 Full Review Jesús Fernández Santos El Pais (Spain) Candy is an old film of episodes vaguely connected through its adolescent protagonist. [Full Review in Spanish] Jul 26, 2019 Full Review Penelope Houston The Spectator The most charitable thing to be said about Candy-not, on the whole, a film to encourage charitable thoughts-is that 'the actors may have enjoyed themselves. Shirley C I guess I liked the film's whimsical feel and it also works well as a time capsule for the decade, but that's the only good thing I can say about this film. The dialogue was terrible and the film felt like the sex fantasy of a 14-year-old boy. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Bill C Really good time capsule. This is what Poor Things should have been. John Astin in two roles is a joy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Demetris A Greatest hollyWood movie. Filled with the greatest actors, only to have their glorious success collapse, for a piece of Candy!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Rami A The atmosphere of this film is not only sexual, but also exceedingly creepy, as well as being extremally psychedelic. Even Marlon Brando said this was the worst movie he's ever done. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Red T 0 out of 5. Maybe if I lived through the Counterculture Movement of the 60's I'd give it a 1.5...The quality of this can be summed up in one scene, the one where Richard Burton is licking the glass window in the car cross eyed. That's this film in a nut shell. The music is the best thing and that's saying a lot because its not good. It's dated and doesn't fit this kind of film at all. Magic Carpet Ride was the only good thing in this. The editing and pacing are horrifically bizarre. I can't believe this goes over 2 hours. I don't even think Candy ever figured out what she was looking for, making the whole story pointless. This is insane how an all All Star cast like this is misused so badly. Even if you can get past the horrifically atrocious acting/miscasting and cinematography that matches, this film has 3 major strikes against it. First its not even the jokes aren't funny. It's that they don't make a lick of sense 90% of the time. If the jokes had been like Airplane! than the loose plot could've been forgiven. Second the plot is so nonsensical and obscure its ridiculous. I get this is making fun of the counter culture of the time but it never forms a cohesive plot around it like Spinal Tap or others that do the same. Finally, this has a rape/sexual assault fetish. It isn't funny or clever like other movies of this time and genre are but just creepy and seeing screen legends act like that is disgusting honestly. Stay away from this at all cost. Everyone involved should be ashamed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Half a star for the all-star cast. Shocking, pretentious film. I think the cast should have been embarrassed to have been named in it. I was 18/19 when I saw this film but naively wasn't prepared for what it was about, I felt very uncomfortable watching it.
