Dizzyingly original, the loopy, multi-layered Adaptation is both funny and thought-provoking.

Joshua Rothkopf In These Times There's no good reason why this should work-the picture is a schizzy, self-indulgent mess-but magically, it does. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Adult stuff only but hilarious and fresh. Rated: 5/5 Sep 2, 2010 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek In the wrong hands, the lunacy could have gotten out of control, but Jonze has near-perfect pitch. He never forces the farce, rooting even Kaufman's wildest digressions in real emotions. Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Stephen Silver Tilt Magazine While not quite as absurd as Being John Malkovich had been, Adaptation was indeed plenty weird. (20th anniversary) Rated: 4/5 Dec 13, 2022 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine This is, essentially, a long demonstration of why not to give people more money for them to prove a point about how bigger-budget filmmaking is inherently an artistically self-defeating proposition. Nov 29, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This ceaselessly clever, brilliantly mind-bending film taps into the intangible spirit of Orlean's book by involving the viewer in Kaufman's painstaking translation to the screen. Mirocko B As I get older, I appreciate this film more and more. Somehow Charlie Kaufman makes Nick Cage Polanski, my bad, Nicolas Cage Coppola, No dad! I TOLD YOU! My name is CAGE now! Nick, look a lot like the insane, uncanny and oddly talented actor he will become years later in films such as Mandy and The Bees! Even Though He Himself Doesn't Know It Yet when this film is made! Whoa what a plot twist there buddy. You go, Cage. Shout-out to my man Robert McKee for 1) having a good sense of humor about the whole 'make fun of me and my life's work in a Hollywood movie' thing and 2)taking himself and everything oh so seriously every day of his life, which must be exhausting but what a payoff when he helps so many would be terrible writers cut their chops or give up, thankfully, and 3) fixing the writing in this once broken script IRL, turning Adaptation into something not just memorable but remarkable. Props to everyone involved. Wild ride and we love it, so thank you. Now go home. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Kyle C It’s worth doing some reading on this movie after you watch it. The real-life backstory is completely outlandish—almost as much as the plot of the film itself. The film seamlessly blends character-driven, thoughtful moments with a metacontextual narrative that wraps back around on itself like the Ouroboros (whatever that means). On paper, there is no reason this film should work. It only succeeds because Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman, and Nicolas Cage are all masters of their craft, each committed 110% to this wonderfully wacky endeavor. Nicolas Cage is perfect for this movie. His ability to play two distinct characters and make them feel different, even within the same scene, is impressive. The logistical feat of achieving this with the limited digital editing technology of the time is equally remarkable. Chris Cooper is phenomenal as the drawling, scummy, but oddly charming Laroche. He brings incredible humanity to a character that could have easily been a joke. Despite its self-awareness, the film's final act falls prey to its own excesses. The absurdity approaches a point of numbness, wearing out its welcome and making us question our investment. It does manage to come together with a satisfying, if predictable, ending. Overall, Adaptation is a hoot with plenty to say about writing, self-understanding, and life in general. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Isa B This film truly has it all. Intelligent humor, raw emotion, social awkwardness so powerful that it will make you blush with embarrassment. What a remarkably original idea turned into a brilliant screenplay, turned into a great film. This is my personal favorite Charlie Kaufman work to date, as well as one of my favorite performances by Nicholas Cage. Genius is an overused word when it comes to brilliant writers, but Charlie Kaufman is indeed a genius among geniuses. Chris Cooper deserved his Oscar win as he is marvelous in Adaptation. Meryl Streep delivers yet another great performance in the film, as she truly never disappoints. I could watch this film repeatedly and never get tired of it. I highly recommend this one. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Christopher R Robert McKee's work of total brilliance. Or something. Fun, clever and thoughtful. A wild ride. even with Nick Coppola. Weird as all heck, loved it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Daniele L As a twin brother and a writer I felt insulted by this movie. Two twins cannot be like this, if a twin brother die, you cannot just run away to save your life, you die inside. This film is just a mind jerk, and the fact that it is explicitly stated does not make it more realistic or artistic. A writer who “wants to be loved,” an ending with hunting and crocodiles...what could be more banal and already seen? I just don't understand how it has won awards. Evidently it's me who doesn't understand. A film about a film written by a person who wants to be loved had already been made by Fellini 50 years earlier and 8 1/2 billion times better. Finally, I wonder how the real author of the book feels about being portrayed this way, from a sensitive writer to a pathetic evil junkie.
