Georgan G Watched this version by mistake. The picture was blurry & audio fuzzy. The actual story was quite intense & interesting. Looking forward to the original 1948 movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Anthony Hopkins plays a surgeon in WWII. This one is well worth your time from the very start. It absolutely reaks of quality. Based on the same author who wrote All Quiet on the Western Front. Hopkins saves Joan Madou from committing suicide after the sudden death of her lover. They become involved, but he is deported and she becomes the mistress of a wealthy man, Alex. With no communications possible between them, they each try to manage under difficult circumstances and, when they finally met up again after six months of unexplained absence, there are shadows hanging over their relationship. They cautiously try to mend their broken affair as international events spin out of control around them. All this time Ravic seeks revenge against the Nazi officer Haake with war eventually declared between France and Germany.
