      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Occasionally funny, but little more than a jumbled, overextended episode of the TV show. Still, Candy devotees won't be disappointed.

Skip S This move had me laughing out loud from beginning to end. It's absurd, it's fearless, and most importantly, it's absolutely hilarious!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review georgan g More like a long sketch, this film is funny and goofy. Lots of comedians with good one-liners, but not much plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Not quite the absolute perfection that is its original 3 season-run, but the movie is still (like the show) a lot of fun, with great laughs, more clever quips, sharp writing, and it's great to see Amy Sedaris lead a film and her amazing character acting! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member There is only one reason to watch Strangers with Candy and that is Amy Sedaris. She was the main lead of the TV series of the same name of which this movie is a prequel. The premise is that a 40 something ex junkie female goes back to school to get a degree. Its sad that Sedaris isn't all that well known because she is a funny entertainer. The script could have been slightly more polished but this is a minor grievance. Give strangers with candy a shot, you just might go back and watch the TV series. (Crazy over the top comedy film staring Amy Sedaris). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw strangers with Candy on my laptop and was pleasantly surprised. Amy Sedaris is hilarious and she is in top form in this hilarious movie which is a prequel to a show of the same name. It's a crime that she isn't all that well known and useless talents like Amy Schumer are. The basic premise is that a 40 something woman who also happens to be an ex junkie returns to high school. Shenanigans ensue and the cast is ably supported by both known and unknown faces. Bob Townsend Atlanta Journal-Constitution Whether you guffaw, giggle or sit stone-faced through Strangers With Candy will depend on your reaction to Sedaris as Jerri and her freak show of over-the-top bad taste. Rated: B Aug 6, 2006 Full Review Roger Moore Orlando Sentinel This plays like a 'Season One' DVD, silly moments interspersed with lots of dull plot and lame high-school send-up situations. Rated: 3/5 Aug 4, 2006 Full Review Toddy Burton Austin Chronicle Fans of the show will rejoice and a few newbies will become converts. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 23, 2006 Full Review Chase Burns The Stranger (Seattle, WA) It boggles the mind why Strangers with Candy, the movie, isn't available on any major streaming service. Dec 8, 2021 Full Review Jonah Koslofsky The Spool Strangers with Candy is almost entirely incomprehensible, which wouldn't necessarily be a problem if it wasn't so constantly offensive. Apr 13, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Strangers With Candy, by and large, lacks ferociousness in regard to the truly deserving targets and wastes too much time on trivial matters.
