In 1943, smuggler Dolek Berson (Tom Conti) lives in the oppressive conditions of the Warsaw Ghetto, witnessing the daily deportation of great numbers of Jews to the Treblinka concentration camp. As it becomes clear that the deportations have a sinister purpose, Dolek joins the efforts of the Jewish Fighting Organization in what will become the famed Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He is also aided by a retired teacher, Regina Kowalska (Rachel Roberts), who lives on the other side of the ghetto wall.
