Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed This is probably the best of the Marvel direct to DVD offerings, and that's because the writers have a clear understanding of what makes Doctor Strange so entertaining. Oct 11, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

matthias s **Review: Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme** I went into *Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme* with low expectations but found myself pleasantly surprised. As a Marvel and comics enthusiast, I appreciated the comic-accurate origin story and decent animation. The voice acting was stellar, making it a great entry point for new fans. The film's darker, mature tone was a welcome change, though it needed more magic and psychedelic visuals to truly capture the comic’s essence. The decision to use Dormammu as the villain was puzzling, especially since the story's victims were in comas due to nightmares—Nightmare would have been a more logical choice. The 3D animation hasn't aged well, and Doctor Strange’s reliance on a sword in the final battle was disappointing. Despite these flaws, the haunting music and overall faithfulness to the source material were impressive. The open ending left me wanting a sequel. A solid 3.5 stars. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/23 Full Review robert p Not quite up to par with other animated movies but still good!!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Before "What If...?" comes out and while I'm still reeling from the major repercussions of Loki and how they'll affect the narrative of Multiverse of Madness alongside WandaVision, what better movie to watch than another entry in the Marvel Animated Features than the first time they tried to tell his origin story? Compared to some of the other animated Marvel stuff I've seen, the occasionally subtitled The Sorcerer Supreme is actually pretty good, probably because it focused on a B-list hero rather than on any of the already famous supers such as Spider-Man. True, it's not as good as the live-action movie from 9 years later and the animation has an admittedly limited feel to it when compared to the DC material - there is a reason why Marvel's direct-to-DVD animation never took off, after all - not helped by the bland art style but it has enough redeeming qualities to make it worth at least one look. The voice acting is pretty good compared to how 50/50 it could get in other movies, the action sequences are well-executed despite lacking that extra fluidity the competition has and the writing can honestly be quite good, mostly because of the Ancient One being a wise man and surprisingly poignant flashbacks focusing on Strange's sister whom I honestly completely forgot about until the memories came flooding back to me from a Marvel guidebook I once read when the first flashback showed up. While I highly doubt anybody is going to hold this 2007 adaptation of the character to the same high standards as The Flashpoint Paradox, Under the Red Hood or hell, even Lionsgate/Marvel's own Planet Hulk if you're feeling generous, this direct-to-DVD Marvel adventure is still a perfectly solid adventure that can also be more palatable if you see it as a prototype for what would come to be in what remains one of the biggest movie franchises of all time.
