Mr. Sills is somewhat magnificent, I think, in his alive and conquering role. Go to Full Review

This romantic yarn by Rafael Sabatini -- of the corsairs who swept the seven seas in the good old Elizabethan days -- has reached the screen with considerable more vitality than most costume efforts of the silversheet. Go to Full Review

09/22/2021 Very well done adaptation that is true to the book. The story flows very well from scene to scene. It begins and ends at the same estate with a great amount of adventure and drama throughout the storyline. See more 09/08/2012 more faithful 2 the book that flynn's version-i still prefer flynn's over this See more 07/05/2011 I am starting to love silent movies. Truly shows you how much dialogue takes away from acting skill... This is a great movie and also WAY ahead of it's time. Crosses the worlds of Christian and Muslim generally showing Muslim as more civilized because of their adherence to the laws of the prophet. Well acted and interesting in terms of plot and execution. This is worth a watch by anyone. See more 07/05/2011 First time watching this silent classic, and I love it! Very well paced, exciting action and just a heck of a lot of fun! See more 06/07/2010 has a slow start but once sir oliver got mixed up with the arabs this turned into a reallt great intrest grabbing film See more 06/06/2010 this was alot of fun since i'm a big fan of curtiz' 1940 version with errol flynn. the story is quite a bit different, more closely following the novel by rafael sabatini published in 1915. the star is a forgotten silent screen idol named milton sills, many of whose films have been lost. the only actor i recognized was wallace beery, playing a sea captain with many outlandish costumes, who becomes a devoted friend of the man he was paid to kidnap and sell into slavery. in this version, our hero becomes a moslem and famed barbary pirate known as sakr-el-bahr, the sea-hawk, after his mistreatment at the hands of the spaniards. the film is a lovely sepia tint, with some well done hand colored flames in several scenes. the sea battles are excellent and some were even spliced into curtiz' later captain blood. director frank lloyd is best remembered for the 1935 mutiny on the bounty but this is highly entertaining and was a huge hit in 1925 See more Read all reviews
