In 2028, OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. While its drones have long been used by the military overseas, their use is forbidden in American law enforcement. However, OmniCorp gets a golden opportunity to crack that market when Detroit cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is critically injured in the line of duty. By transforming Murphy into a cyborg, OmniCorp executives hope to rake in billions for their shareholders, but they forget one thing: There's still a man inside the machine.

Critics Consensus

While it's far better than it could have been, José Padilha's RoboCop remake fails to offer a significant improvement over the original.

Scott Tobias The Dissolve [A]fter an opening sequence as promising as the one here, it needs at least an attempted follow-through, not the jumble of confused ideas and time-wasting effects that take up the bulk of the film. Rated: 2.0/5 Feb 20, 2014 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic Surveying the peculiar array of 1980s retreads clustered into release this week, I'm reminded of Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II, traveling forward in time 30 years to discover that everything is still the same, only worse. Feb 14, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The Brazilian director José Padilha may be working for a Hollywood studio but he doesn't temper his critique of American imperialism, big business and political corruption. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2014 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ What could have been a depressing assault on the childhood of those who grew up in the 1980s was instead one of the best action-sci-fi movies since Minority Report over a decade earlier. Paul S Compared to the original RoboCop, this one can't really compete. It lacks the intensity and action of the first one, which made this a real downgrade. Despite its flaws, this movie is really fun to watch. The story is compelling, and it has amazing visuals. I definitely recommend it for sci-fi and action fans! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Paul Y Went in with bad expectations because of all the bad reviews, but was pleasantly surprised at how engaging and fun this movie was. Might not be the most faithful remake but was still a fun popcorn flick regardless. Definitely deserves a higher rating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Gabriel M The 2014 RoboCop remake offers a visually stunning, modern take on the 1987 classic, but ultimately falls short when compared to the original. Joel Kinnaman does a good job portraying Alex Murphy, and the film brings forward relevant themes like corporate greed, surveillance, and the ethics of technology. However, the pacing is slower, and while the movie explores deeper moral questions, it sacrifices the fast-paced action and satirical elements that made the original so iconic. The special effects are impressive, and the film does a great job in updating RoboCop's design to reflect today's technological landscape. But for a movie like this, it feels like there's an absence of the kind of thrilling, high-octane action that defined the original. The 1987 RoboCop had a perfect blend of social commentary, dark humor, and intense action that kept audiences hooked. This remake, while visually appealing and well-acted, doesn't quite capture the same balance. The remake leans heavily into the drama of RoboCop's transformation and the moral questions surrounding the integration of man and machine, which is fine, but it feels like it missed an opportunity to provide more of the adrenaline-pumping action that fans expect from an action movie like this. Overall, while I appreciate the film's attempt at exploring deeper themes and giving the original concept a modern update, it lacks the same spark and intensity that made the first film a genre-defining classic. If you're a fan of the original, this remake might feel like a bit of a letdown in terms of excitement and the overall impact. It's a decent watch for those who enjoy thoughtful science fiction, but for me, the original RoboCop remains the superior film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Mitch W This director took a perfect formula and made it unpalatable. He completely missed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Aaron D Better than it has every right to be, this reboot is much darker and with more teeth than the original franchise, with tighter parts overall, even if a few elements are loose and undercooked or poorly cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/25 Full Review Arnie B Good modern take on the original Robocop story. Less of a gory action film and looks a bit more at the ethical problems with a cyborg cop. Good, happy ending, and Samuel L. Jackson screams some aswell. Its nice seeing the movie be treated as a single story, unlike the original, which has some craptastic sequels and ended with quite a few questions left unanswered. The movies complement eachother, but both have a different tone. Definitely doesnt deserve the hate. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
