      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite a lavish and polished production, Dorian Gray is tame and uninspired with a lifeless performance by Ben Barnes in the title role.

Jelisije J Not the greatest adaptation and definitely not the most insulting. At least they get the character of Dorian Grey correct .....the third act felt a bit rushed though sad to say. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Henryk N It's just my favourite movie. I love the visuals, the clothes, the acting, the dialogues. It is a bit different from the book but it isn't worse! It is really good and i will recommend it to everyone ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Reinhard W Very close to the Book… and an overall fine Production. Scince there are so many Versions out there, it might (!) get the Audience in a State of „Boredom" like: „Oh NO… not ANOTHER one!" BUT…; IF you get involved and FOLLOW the story with your eyes open, you WILL love this adaptation of the classic. After all, there's never a dull moment because good camera work, production design and good acting... keep your attention! A bit "OFF Topic: I found myself wishing that Mister KUBRIK had ever tackled this material! WHAT kind of "painting" would THAT have been…?!?!? Finally, for me it‘s a well earned 3,5 solid (!) Stars! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Angelie F This movie was released in 2009 but I did not care to watch it cause of these reviews. Just started reading the book and watched this movie and I was in awe. Ben Barnes carries Dorian so well. He shows empathy in the beginning and there is a transition due to the external influence. This goes to show how damaging reviews are to films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/23 Full Review Lola N So SO BAD. I cannot even explain how bad that was never curse yourself with watching it please. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

James Berardinelli ReelViews While Wilde's wit remains firmly entrenched, there's also a gruesome vein of gothic horror, and elements of the original which existed in the subtext or were merely hinted at are brought graphically into the open. Rated: 3/4 Aug 24, 2010 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) This uneasy mixture of horror and elegant wit, which worked so well originally, never really catches fire thanks to Parker's undistinguished handling. Rated: 2/5 Nov 11, 2009 Full Review London Evening Standard Teenagers will love this film. They will love it because there are lots of close-ups of Barnes being done unto or doing unto others. As a vehicle for a rising and undeniably talented star, it hits the spot. Rated: 2/5 Sep 11, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Taking liberties with Wilde’s source, Parker’s adaptation accentuates far too much, insisting on special effects and even some contrived suspense in place of the author’s dark drama. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Nikki Baughan Roll Credits The whole thing plays like MTV meets Penguin Literary Classics, all fast editing and high gloss cinematography that just can't compensate for the lack of any emotional resonance. Rated: 2/5 Oct 29, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a misfire of nigh epic proportions... Rated: 1/4 Feb 24, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews
