What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a lavish and polished production, Dorian Gray is tame and uninspired with a lifeless performance by Ben Barnes in the title role.

This uneasy mixture of horror and elegant wit, which worked so well originally, never really catches fire thanks to Parker's undistinguished handling. Go to Full Review

Teenagers will love this film. They will love it because there are lots of close-ups of Barnes being done unto or doing unto others. As a vehicle for a rising and undeniably talented star, it hits the spot. Go to Full Review

Taking liberties with Wilde’s source, Parker’s adaptation accentuates far too much, insisting on special effects and even some contrived suspense in place of the author’s dark drama. Go to Full Review

Florinda K Oct 6 Very boring, no plot. Too long See more Edward L Sep 19 Not a patch on the book but quite watchable on its own terms. Unfortunately Fiona Shaw, one of Britain's worst actors, is in the cast, giving her usual ham performance. See more Tommy D @Thomas005 Jul 6 Great adaptament of the romance. Ben Barnes play a good Dorian gray See more Aaron C Apr 24 Not read the book but it's on my TBR pile, I can't imagine this being even close to the book. See more Johann D. M 10/15/2024 This dark fantasy horror film based on Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, tells the story of an attractive Englishman whose loveliness and spirit are captured in an enchanted painting that keeps him from aging. His portrait becomes further tainted with every sin he commits while he remains young and handsome. Though the gripping story is supported by strong performances from the rest of the cast, it is clear that this role was not a good fit for Ben Barnes. The film suffers from poor pacing and a lack of cohesion, with an ending that feels abrupt and rushed. Additionally, the adaptation strays significantly from the original novel, with many changes that do not serve the story well. However, the costumes are stunning—unfortunately, they are a highlight in a film that could have been far better executed. See more Dylan L 09/11/2024 Horrible adaptation. They change everything in the book. The most important parts were changed so the meaning of the actions change as well. I do not recommen to watch this movie. See more Read all reviews
