Audience Member I knew that the musical Rent was inspired by this opera, but I had NO idea just how much of the plot was the same! Very well done and quite moving. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Very passionate and beautifully shot that matched the beautiful music but still stayed true to the original opera (although having shortened it quite a bit). I enjoyed it, and the vocal performances in this film are BREATHTAKING, even though the singers and actors aren't the same people :/. Still great. B Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this on Christamas Day. I've previously only seen the one aria several times over the years. I love this period of history anyway and it is wonderfully recreated here. the sets are a wonderful mix of stage and cinema. the music is truly beautiful and perfomances are believable. OK so mimi will never really sound like a consumptive but that is the magic of art. let this wonderful production take your emotions with it and come away all the more enriched for it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Robert Dornhelm's film of this great opera tragedy works well. This is a far better way to do a film of an opera, using proper cinematic techniques and sets that realistically capture the poverty and biting cold of a threadbare tenement in a sleazy part of late 19th century Paris than a film of a staged performance ever can. The cast are all first rate but Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon are achingly moving as the doomed lovers. They are, of course, amongst the world's finest opera singers at the present time, but more than that, they are convincing and could teach many of our current popular movie stars a thing or two about acting. Netrebko perfectly portrays the fragility and playfulness of Mimi and Villazon is the hotheaded poet with a deep passion. The soundtrack isn't bad either! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful movie! Anna Netrebko is great and movie has amazing black and white scenes and camera. I think is a great version for one of my favorite operas. I think after this movie, I believe that is possible to use cinema for opera. Metropolitan is also proving that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A sumptuous film version of Puccin's masterpiece that doesn't disappoint providing one accepts at face value that this is a different experience to a live stage recording. This is a fabulous pairing of lead singers, beautifully blended voices with great acting presence. Rolando Villazon plays the perfect Rodoflfo: naïve, jealous, hot-bloodedand is in great voice. Highly reccomended. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
