Critics Consensus

While nowhere near as painful as it could have been, The Three Stooges fails to add fresh laughs to the Stooges' inestimable cinematic legacy.

TI H The Three Stooges were a hilarious comedy team from 1922 to 1970, consisting of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and a revolving third slot that traditionally favored Curly Howard over Shemp and the rest. RogerEbert.com mentions that (if you’ll forgive my paraphrasing) the Farrelly Brothers made the best Three Stooges tribute that they could have made. I agree. In my opinion, this is the best that could have been done with the stale subject matter. I LOVE Larry, Curly, and Moe. . .in fifteen-minute increments. I bust a gut laughing at their antics, then suddenly stop, the tickling in my belly subsiding, and I am left satisfied and ready to stop the movie before it’s done. I imagine women can tolerate the trio for less time, perhaps five minutes. Ladies tend to not “get” the Stooges, and I don’t blame them. They’re looking for something morally redeeming, and there is none. It’s three jerkoffs smacking each other around to the sound of hilarious sound effects. //// You’d think I’d give this movie 4 or 5 stars, because it does what it sets out to do. One problem is that the movie takes too long to get started (over twenty minutes), and when it does, it turns out to be a Blues Brothers plot to save the orphanage. We see the Stooges as child orphans, and although twenty-five years pass between Act I and Act II, none of the nuns seem to have aged. I suppose that works in this type of film that is only slightly more realistic than a cartoon. I should also mention our three stars do a fantastic job of embodying their characters. //// I just don’t think the Stooges’ antics can prop up a full-length feature. Perhaps the Farrelly brothers could have made a three-part movie. Part 1: the Stooges. Part 2: Laurel and Hardy. Part 3: Abbot & Costello. Every act, a different flavor of slapstick. The Neapolitan approach might have held my interest. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Brandon C They should make a new three stooges movie But this movie was good and it was funny I had a good time watching it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Audience Member very funny Chris Sean and Will killed it as Moe Larry and Curly Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Daniel d The actors did a great job portraying the originals. The slapstick was true to the original as well. The story and plot were a bit lacking. But still a good laugh if you were a Stooges fan. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Mike P The question is...WHY? Why should we watch these IMPOSTER Stooges when we can just click onto YouTube and watch the real ones for free? 24/7/365?? I mean, this almost reminds me of that pointless, asinine Shot-for-Shot Psycho Remake from Gus Van Zant; a few years back; that left us all scratching our heads... WHY?? A replica movie like this serves no purpose...Unless you can come up with three JUST AMAZING comedic actors that can somehow summon up the Stooges with their impressionism with such amazing alicrity and accuracy as to leave us all breathless... If not then; it's pointless... And unfortunately, that IS DEFINITELY the case here... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Georgan G For those of us who grew up watching this silly trio knock each other around, getting hit in the face with pies & those great catch phrases: this brought back fond memories. Watch the original to see just how well this film is. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
