Critics Consensus

13 Sins may be derivative of other horror films that made their moral points with more finesse, but it atones with a grim sense of humor and sleek style.

John Anderson Thompson on Hollywood The overall effect is enormously amusing. And haunting as well. Apr 24, 2014 Full Review Kristy Puchko CinemaBlend An unrepentant horror-thriller, stoked with tension and grim revelations. Rated: 3/5 Apr 18, 2014 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com Darkly funny and deeply twisted, "13 Sins" grabs you from its startling opening sequence and doesn't let go. Rated: 3/4 Apr 18, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com 13 Sins is perversely entertaining enough to keep hold interest, sporting a rather grungy, crumbly New Orleans in Zoltan Honti's cinematography. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Shannon McGrew Nightmarish Conjurings I wouldn't say this movie was scary but it had a lot of dark humor and was incredibly entertaining. John C I just love that line. Even if ’13 Sins’ was totally rubbish I think I’d still feel like I’d got my money’s worth simply for that line about ‘dancing for the golden toad.’ However, the film is actually pretty good anyway, so the ‘golden toad’ bit was just a happy bonus. Okay, it’s not a classic, but it’s watchable enough to be entertaining. It’s about a man who’s down on his luck financially and gets offered the chance to turn his fortunes around with the help of a mysterious phone call. The anonymous person on the other end sets him various takes, starting with mundane and easy then progressing to sinister and illegal – all for varying ‘cash prizes. Now, if you can get over the fact that most of us would tell this caller where to go when he starts ordering us to break the law, you’ll probably enjoy the film. Obviously our hapless hero obeys the rules of the game completely, otherwise it would be a pretty dull (and short) movie. So, if you can suspend your disbelief over that minor plot point, you’ll find a half decent film in there somewhere that should entertain you for an hour and a half and there are a few plot twists in the film that you might not see coming, but I won’t go into too much detail on that one. Also, just for a bonus, you have Ron Perlman in there. Granted he’s used a fair bit in the marketing purposes, but, in actuality, he’s really only a peripheral character, but he’s still cool anyway. Just make sure you ignore the bit where our hero ‘bars’ a door from the pursuing police officers by swiftly balancing a (not particularly study) chair next to it. Somehow that keeps them out completely. I laughed, but I still enjoyed the film! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Tasos L Just a movie to kill your time. Nothing special. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Ari V Surprise gem. Especially for those who 'do their own research' ;) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Jeremy A This movie was awesome. Lots of fun! 4.5* Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Audience Member Really could’ve moved a bit faster in some parts and I’ve seen better versions of this scenario in other films Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Logan D A meek salesman receives a call with a challenge. Accomplish 13 assigments and he will get the money he needs to care for his mentally disabled brother and then some. Very stylish thriller with occasional bits of dark humor. A remake of the 2006 Thai movie, 13 Beloved. For what it lacks in tension it makes up for in pacing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
