Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Director, co-writer and production designer Daniel Lee keeps things moving so quickly, there's little time to worry about such basics as where we are or what's actually going on. Aug 22, 2014 Full Review Daniel M. Gold New York Times While "14 Blades" grinds on perhaps a half-hour too long, its ambitions and energies show that for a fresh take on the western, go east. Aug 21, 2014 Full Review Simon Abrams Village Voice Come for Ku's joyful choreography, stay for Yen's most memorable post-comeback performance. Aug 19, 2014 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus ...all that said, it has its fun moments and Yen is just a total tough guy. Never has a small wooden box been filled with so many fun weapons of death. Apr 9, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Amassed with bountiful action sequences and handsome visuals, the expertly utilized special effects will be reason enough for genre fans to enjoy the film. Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Andy Crump Movie Mezzanine Casting Donnie Yen in a martial arts film and burying him in CGI is akin to casting Arnold Schwarzenegger in an action film and arming him with a Nerf gun. Logan D A royal guard is framed for treason and must fight to save the empire. Although the overdone makeup on Yen was distracting at times, very much enjoyed this bit of modern Wuxia cinema. Some striking sets and I loved the usage of shadows. Best wow moment is brief but memorable as a character catches falling leaves and slings them like knives. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Alain M classic Donny Yen movie. Fantasy story, and awesome looking setting and fingerlicking fight sequences Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Liam D A good but nothing too spectacular film This adventure has a enjoyable lead but nothing else Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/21 Full Review Audience Member Superb action interwoven with history, China's dazzlingwestern desert landscape, and one-dimensional action characters who unexpectedly evolve to realize true love and die for honor as well as society's greater good. The arch-villianess' Tuo-Tuo's steel whip sword as well as her ability to create several illusions of herself dressed in different layers of clothing makes for mesmerizing action. Her and the heroic Qinglong's climatic joint deaths show how understated smoldering sexuality has it all over the west's now cliche soft porn "love" scenes. This climax seems to pun the French cultural conceitof le petite morte. Was this intentional? I‘ve viewed this film at least five times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Frances H This movie had everything! First a mustached, crinkle-haired hero who wears a hat that makes him look like Antonio Banderas in Zorro, complete with younger protege who has the long straight hair style of Wind in His Hair from Dances With Wolves, a band of desert thieves who turn out to be good guys, lead by a Chinese Johnny Depp look- alike from Pirates of the Caribbean who sports no shirt to show off his killer abs, a female baddie who has the make up job of Julie Newmar playing Cat Woman on the 60s TV show Batman who sports a Bo Derek from 10 hairdo, who can actually not only strip while fighting, but put them back on, too, and finally a bad guy general with a sheik's headdress who serves a prince with iron legs, kind of the opposite to Dr. Loveless in Wild, Wild West. The airborne fighting styles are right out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, while the music could come from just about any of the old Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. Last, but not least, there is a rockslide ambush in the canyon straight out of really old westerns and the romantic ending when "every time a bell rings" the hero comes back to the heroine riding out of the sunset. WOW! How can all of this not be entertaining? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/17 Full Review Audience Member Interesting characters and good fight sequences aren't quite enough. All the players come off as part of a B-storyline instead of the main plot. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
