Set in a specific time and place, 1945 also resonates as a story of people doing terrible things to other people in the name of opportunity and getting ahead. It hits home at a time when the idea of loving thy neighbor feels sadly passé. Go to Full Review

1945 serves as both a reminder of Hungary's complicity in the Holocaust and as an examination of what happens when an entire community is asked to keep one horrible secret. Go to Full Review

"1945" is unafraid to portray off-putting prejudice over the course of a steady and slow build by director Ferenc Török. Go to Full Review

Cut off from a genuine left-wing criticism of Stalinism, Eastern European intellectuals such as director Török and scriptwriter Szántó still generally and unthinkingly lump fascism and Stalinism together. Go to Full Review

This small film features a massive day of reckoning for everyone on screen, and is highly satisfying, sometimes darkly humorous, and wonderfully acted. You may have seen stories of betrayal like this before, but never told this way. Go to Full Review

05/01/2021 It is a riveting post-holocaust Western, the scenes without dialogue spoke much louder than its few trivial conversations. It is up there with 3:10 to Yuma and High Noon. Some have compared 1945 to A Fist Full of Dollars, perhaps because they are both terse, but 1945 is far superior. See more 03/25/2021 The movie is fantastic. Stark images, fabulous photography - reminiscent of Hitchcock. As a Jew who grew up after the Holocaust, but lived in the shadow of it - watching the pervasive guilt while feeling grief is moving and difficult but worthwhile. See more 08/31/2020 Nagyon jó film szerintem belehett sorolni a legjobb magyar filmhez. Hatalmas dicséret a stábnak. (Google Translate) I think a very good film can be classified as the best Hungarian film. Huge praise to the crew. See more dave d 12/27/2019 Paranoia and guilt can be anchors and this Hungarian film excellently portrays that albatross in a movie that is brisk, but slow and effective. The slow burn as you try to put the pieces together as to why people are behaving the way the are. This post Holocaust feature isn't like most and is fresh and packs a punch. While there isn't much on the page, it's visuals are such a brain twister that I didn't care. Well-acted and framed, '1945' works. Final Score: 7.2/10 See more 10/22/2019 Effective and interesting little film. Slightly over egged for my taste but overall an engaging 90 minutes or so. See more Tim G 08/03/2019 Excellent. I appreciated the community's range of responses to the situation which demonstrated the complexity of humanity; rather than the sometimes overly broad strokes used when discussing this history.
