Koen Mortier's first feature 'Ex-Drummer' was a gritty, chaotic experience but for his follow-up, The 22nd of May, he delves into a much reflective frame of mind about a chaotic event. The basic premise goes: While on duty, a security guard witnesses a disaster in a shopping center that leaves him emotionally ravaged with guilt for his inability to stop this tragedy. This is a film that examines this security guards extreme guilt, where he is confronted by various victims of the tragedy and questioned as to why he couldn't do more to stop it. The film starts rather conventionally. We are shown this man's morning routine as he prepares for work, makes his lunch, and begins his shift as a security guard. After the bomb explosion the film becomes an experimental trip into the mind of this individual. These confrontations which this man has in his mind vary; some victims blame him, others just want answers, and some also feel just as responsible for the tragedy as he does. I found this approach to be very captivating and I can only imagine that it's a rather accurate portrayal as to how this man's mind would be swirling with all different types of emotions. He contemplates the victims themselves, what they left behind in their families and has his own reflections of himself as a careless person in the past. The scenes where he is haunted by the man responsible for the bomb are also affective and quite powerful, consisting of some haunting imagery, which I guess could be used to describe the whole film. From a technical standpoint the films cinematography and music create a harrowing mood that grabbed me and transported me into this man's guilt. I liked Koen Mortier's film 'Ex-Drummer' but this film is on another level for me because it's reflective, thought provoking and the type of film that will stay in my head for a long time.

the new movie from mortier never has the power of his "ex drummer", an interesting start results in a very strange movie about a man and his guilt...not easy to watch and not really a must see
