      Critics Consensus

3 Hearts skips a few narrative beats, but this thoroughly French romance is brought to life by the full-blooded performances of a first-rate cast.

victor g Too slow not enough happened. Deneuve and Chaira were wasted. Charlotte was enigmatic for no reason. What did she do for a living? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Serge L Super acting to make the thing believable. It is amusing the way it is set up and I kind of like the idea that love and sex are not quite the same to the point that a frustrated love at first meeting reach out awkwardly. Can't say this could happen to a lot of people. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/21 Full Review Audience Member This film had a lot of elements that I crave, lots of character development, slow moving plot, no stunt doubles or violence. It illustrates the weaknesses in human character and no one can be fully trusted. It did keep my interest and the ending spared us a long drawn out demise. The main character had almost no connections to anyone, not even a real home or a brother who cared much for him yet he was able to get in the middle of the most beautiful sisterly love. It is such a shame. There is some ambiguity so the ending is up to interpretation. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Never has someone as unworthy as the character of Marc been unbelievably the center of a love triangle with Sylvie and Sophie. That said, the cinematography is gorgeous and the ladies of this cast are all amazing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A lovely story and a excellent performance of Charlotte Gainsbourg. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member well acted family drama about missed opportunities and the wreckage that follows from not letting bygones be bye and gone. Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer It leaves behind a nagging feeling, a suggestion there's more to the story than its story. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 10, 2015 Full Review Marci Schmitt Minneapolis Star Tribune Despite a slow start and jarring narration, "3 Hearts" entertains with its melodramatic amour fou. Rated: 3/4 Apr 9, 2015 Full Review Ann Hornaday Washington Post A tasteful, mildly intriguing romantic drama from writer-director Benot Jacquot. Rated: 2/4 Apr 9, 2015 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A melodrama of a love made impossible by conscious choices, Jacquot's latest exists in a familiar vein of vintage offerings, enhanced by a first rate cast in another of the director's exercises in repression and its consequences. Rated: 3/5 Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy Ultimately, there are too many confusing and laughable stylistic choices that make 3 Hearts anything but forgettable. Nov 9, 2018 Full Review Pat Padua DCist I did not feel anybody's heart beating ... but those strings kept me moderately invested in a pair of sisters and the moppet tax inspector they loved.
