Critics Consensus

47 Meters Down doesn't take its terrifying premise quite as far as it should, but its toothy antagonists still offer a few thrills for less demanding genre enthusiasts.

Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter But on its own B-movie terms 47 Meters Down works just fine, not wearing out its welcome thanks to its quick set-up, rapid pacing and brief running time. Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian It's not a great film but, once the preliminary scenes on terra firma are over and we descend to a place we don't belong, it delivers an hour or so of sustained physical and psychological terror. Rated: 3/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times British director Johannes Roberts makes decent use of the murk (the film was largely shot in a tank in London) and the sisterhood theme gives the film a broader appeal than, say, The Shallows. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2017 Full Review Cris Kennedy The Canberra Times (Australia) The four leads are fine. This feels like a collective of Hollywood kids who got a lucky break on Bring Your Daughter to Work Day. Rated: 3/5 Aug 12, 2022 Full Review Meredith Jill Brown Dread Central The film moves at a steady, scary pace with plenty of "uh-oh" moments to keep you on your toes. Rated: 3/5 Aug 24, 2021 Full Review Robin Holabird Robin Holabird Sure enough, chains break, and the result leads to the kind of tense and bloody moments Shark Week fans adore. Lydia K Jaws rip off…………………… Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Iris A I am not sure why this movie has such poor reviews. I enjoy realistic horror/thrillers. Sure, I may not know much about scuba diving, but I feel that the movie did accurately portray the dangers of not doing research, going off with strangers, and hypoxia - which is one of the biggest concerns in diving. I have a huge fear of deep water. Not just the ocean, but water in general. Public bodies of water freak me out because of germs. Many man made bodies have been turned into waste dumps. Deep bodies in which you can’t see the bottom is terrifying to me. This movie really had me on edge. I think they did a great job and it’s one of my favorites. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Lillyanna J It was very good at the start but then the movie just went all over the place all the deaths mixed with the hallucination was not put in the best way and the ending was left on weird spot you would think ITV’s a cliffhanger but it’s not, all in the end it was a good movie but I wish that they made the story more clear and Kate dying was not a good part. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Alexander S 47 Meters Down has an intriguing premise, but its execution falls short in terms of direction. The tension wasn’t sufficiently sharp to keep me on the edge of my seat, and while the cast is competent, their performances are somewhat underwhelming. The movie itself also suffers from a touch of corniness. Grading: C- Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review Smackie u Mandy's character a grown woman acting like she's 12. Script sucks. Overall a waste of time Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Lincoln D Definetly not the best shark movie, but not the worst. It holds a weak plot and relies on jump scares for a more "thrilling" experience Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
