Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Next time out, Fidell needs to find some kind of midrange between A Teacher's outré leanings and 6 Years' conventionality. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 20, 2015 Full Review Justin Chang Variety [6 Years] too often veers toward melodramatic overstatement, inspiring little empathy or understanding despite the committed performances of promising young leads Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield. Aug 18, 2015 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter A melodrama benefitting from excellent performances but suffering from a too-obvious script. Aug 18, 2015 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Movies with Mae Fidell's tone and direction keep the film steady and the characters relatable. Rated: 3/5 May 2, 2019 Full Review James Clay Fresh Fiction 6 YEARS shows what happens when two well-intentioned lovers begin to fester. Rated: B Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Sam Bathe Fan The Fire Hannah Fidell has quickly become one of the faces to watch in independent film, her naturalistic style of filmmaking and ability to get the best of our her actors and shepherd improvised scenes creates characters and movies you want to root for. Michael C Great Movie!!! Great Acting!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Drama Darling D I found this movie to be extremely realistic. It could've easily been my own toxic relationship in my early twenties. Except I married him and we spent the next 12 years slowly breaking up while simultaneously starting a family. "6 Years" wasn't a story with neatly drawn lines between the villain and the victim. Dan and Mel pushed each other's buttons and resorted to classic drunken flip outs, and over the top drama. Who doesn't know at least one toxic couple that is sure to argue and/or cause a scene if one or both are drinking? Dan and Mel had not yet developed the ability to communicate like functional adults but instead opted for total explosive meltdowns that everything a relationship ending conversation. Conflict like that felt normal to them because they don't know any better. Dan was unconsciously pulling away while Mel grew even more desperate and clingy. They'd reached the stage where it hurts less to be together than apart. Ah yes, highs and lows of first love. But the heartbreak when it's all over is a real doozy. Side note: Mel's drunk friend was terrible for letting that guy stay over. Who does that? Also that girl from the Dan's job was gross and should crawl back into the gutter from whence she came. Girls like her stay desperately single and unhappy about it for a reason. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/23 Full Review John R Sadly, this is probably a fairly accurate picture of modern relationships. A lot of time and emotional investiture, coupled with a failure to truly commit or know what exactly it is the relationship is for. Nothing to write home about. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A romantic film in which you hope the leads break up because Farmiga plays a toxic character, but plays it well. You root for Ben Rosenfield throughout. There is one scene in which she has a psychotic break that leads to his arrest in which I was tempted to throw in the towel. But I kept watching because I wanted it to end well for him...Rosenfield is just that good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A pretty realistic portrayal of a toxic relationship but these two characters are too irritating for me to have really liked this film.
