Camille J This is a picture of quality. First due to the very well known director Anthony Mann. The cast did a convincing display of their character with enough eeringness that completed the suspenseful script of the film. All in all a film that kept me awake through the entire picture. I recommend the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review JV L Discovered this gem on a random streaming service and am I glad I did! Clearly a B movie, but one that is moody, fast paced and blessed with some excellent talent. Helene Thimig plays an elderly disabled woman who frankly worships her only child, Rosemary. A paratrooper friend of Thimig's daughter travels to the woman's home after being discharged from the army, looking forward to meeting the pen pal he's fallen in love with long distance. En route to meeting Rosemary at her mother's home, he befriends a woman physician (played by the beautiful Virginia Grey, she of the scene stealing one liners in "The Women"s perfume counter scene) who has a professional connection to the same woman. Mysteries, secrets and lies bob to the surface, affecting all involved-and soon it's clear something is very wrong with Rosemary. The film moves along at a zippy pace, lasting under an hour. Don't miss it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Audience Member good mystery/suspenser Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member 2.5: A nice little picture from Anthony Mann. Nothing special and very short, but entertaining all the same. The story, performances, casting, production values, etc all scream B-picture and none are superb, but it remains eminently watchable in a way that only second rate classic Hollywood genre productions can be. It's as if we've seen this film before and seeing it again is like coming home. It is like comfort film (food). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Strangers In The Night is a fun little dark noir by Anthony Mann about a lonely, mentally disturbed elderly woman whose manifestation of a daughter she never had causes problems for a returning Marine from the war--who received letter's from this fictitious daughter. Running under 60 minutes in length, this film is very direct and to the point in creating a rather disturbing view on Maternity. Pretty much for any film of this genre, the film lives or dies with the central performance, and Helen Thimig, who plays the elderly woman, really excels in this particular film. There is a quiet unease about this woman, and everything she does is cold and calculated, yet she is completely detached from the reality of life. Mann makes sure that the character is somewhat of a tragic figure, particularly during the finale in which we learn of her maternal desires and mental breakdown being primarily a result of her inability to have children. It's fast-paced, efficient and features a good atmosphere with some trademark Mann compositions making this a cool little semi-forgotten film of Mann's filmography.
