On New Year's Eve, Dr. Steven Monks (Richard Johnson) calls for a quarantine in the British city of Bath after diagnosing a case of smallpox. His attention to the crisis is compromised by his struggling marriage to Julie (Claire Bloom), a former nurse whom he cheated on, who turns out to be infected herself. Just when the outbreak appears to be under control, it's discovered that the lone remaining case is that of Ruth Preston (Yolande Donlan), the woman with whom Monks had an affair.

Audience Member look, I live in Bath so this film is a joy to my eyes. it's not the best, but it's interesting and engaging. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/21 Full Review Audience Member Val Guest's interesting blend of domestic drama and medical thriller is certainly a very British film, which means it can be pretty stiff. There are some strong elements - strong performances, an effective atmosphere with great black and white cinematography - but it's just too dry to be consistently compelling. A handsome production, but far from Guest's best work. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member I ended August watching this film. The backdrop of an epidemic was an interesting way to discuss marriage and divorce. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched it 4 the 1st time last week. Fantastic! Have to say that i did guess the ending tho!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
