Carlos Aguilar Variety No one would deem Raat’s “8 Views” easily accessible, but that doesn’t mean it’s in any way indecipherable, obtuse nor unsatisfying. Dec 31, 2024 Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending In Marko Raat’s sometimes beguiling, often taxing feature, 8 Views of Lake Biwa, prayers are frequently heard in voice over, usually whispered, and onscreen we are immersed in his ravishing visual storytelling that eschews narrative convention. Vince Q. Atmospheric odyssey from Estonian director Marko Raat, inspired by the eight views tradition of Japanese poetry and painting, Raat transplants his story to Lake Peipsi, which separates Estonia from Russia. At once lovely and cruel, the interwoven plots transcribe story arcs through each of the inhabitants of a small fishing village. Raat’s stylistic reminds me of Yorgos Lanthimos and his surrealistic method of filmmaking. TBH, I watched this film twice. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
