The film works best when it hangs back and just lets the moments of authenticity and humanity ride, focusing on the girls when they are not playing the role of perfect sexy pop automatons, and just being themselves, their honesty showing through.

Fascinating viewing for fans, non-fans and the genre's increasing number of new fans, 9 Muses of Star Empire is a bitter pill to swallow in the face of the bubblegum joy usually associated with the danceable, disposable perfection of K-Pop.
