jon c Women's wrestling is tricky If you want all the marbles you have to bring them The late Peter Falk is a wrestling coach, Harry Sears He's desperate to make a lot of money and fame handling two women Iris and Molly He dubs them the California Dolls Molly is a high school dropout with a substance problem while Iris and Harry are romantically involved but never see eye-to-eye on a professional level Harry starts at the bottom making his way to the top of the wrestling circuit with them Yet a sleazy promoter Eddie Cisco might make things tricky It's one of the many indignities they face from mud wrestling to bad motels to small time crooks Molly and Iris even face off against the Toledo Tigers The movie is about the trials and travails of female wrestling Whether it's the money, being a collaborative team, or trying to make it to the big leagues the sport is quite complicated The three leads have such remarkable chemistry The wrestling scenes are intense, brutal, and suspenseful The filmmakers definitely got the intensity of the sport down to a tee It's more than just gorgeous built-women in leotards It takes some trekking to get to the final match but man is it exciting to watch Both teams of girls give it all they got to win or go home Sadly this was the final film of director Robert Aldrich After this picture wrapped, Aldrich had surgery which ended in fatal kidney failure leading to his passing But he did manage to make a sports-drama that's fun as it is endearing looking at the complexities of female wrestling than most would admit A flop when it came out but did better abroad Upbeat and pleasant enough sports flick Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A very underrated sports film; the last movie by a terrific director. Of note: the actresses do their own (amazing) stunts, adding great authenticity to the production. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member A Good wrestling movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review s r I started and got about half way through, maybe someday I'll finish it! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member director robert aldrich (baby jane) goes out with a bang in his last film mixing up genres & making it work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Something I was pleased to see turn up on TCM recently, and I went into it not knowing what to really expect, beyond the fact that it'd been on a friend's 'underrated dramas' list awhile back. I really enjoyed the look into the fairly bleak but occasionally funny or charming world of the small-time ladies wrestling circuit. Well worth a peep if you have a chance.
