Audience Member Absolutely fantastic. Watching the entire series again after almost 10 years was a wonderful experience. My favorite episodes are Beginnings, Conquest, Burning Convictions, The Body of the Queen, Forces of Nature, and The Two Winstons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Detailed documentary spanning the history of the British Isles from stone-age settlements through WWII. Simon Schama narrates and supplies little known "tidbits" that round out the stories and prevent them from degrading into boring battles and confusing dates. Queen Victoria was only 4'11" tall. Powerful queens ruled countries as well as kings. Queen Elizabeth I had her own cousin beheaded. Poor Irish farmers in 1840 were eating over 10 pounds of potatoes a DAY...sometimes washed down with a little buttermilk. Intrigue, politics, religion and greed...all those great noble human adventures are shown here. Portraits, on-site photography and original musical scores help to blend all together for an engrossing and informative viewing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member i finally completed the series - all 16 hours.. personally, i loved every minute.. Schama is next level - absorbing.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member An enjoyable and enlightening survey of British history by Simon Schama in 15 episodes on 5 DVDs. He doesn't shy away from expressing his particular viewpoint of that history. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

John Leonard New York Magazine/Vulture I'm tired of a history so evenhanded that it ends up metronomic and stupefying. At least [host Simon Schama] is full of passionate convictions. Feb 3, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
