Audience Member James Mason plays a lazy, womanizing officer in the Royal Navy who falls for Vera Miles. The trouble is she's already engaged to George Sanders. Convinced that he could win her if he had more money, he concocts a scheme to fake his defection to the Soviet Union in order to sue the press when he returns safe and sound. A fairly light and inconsequential film that gets by quite well on the immeasurable charm of its cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very ordinary British comedy from the mid 20th century, and James Mason never really looks that comfortable in this genre, the future James Bond director also did better in the action genre than here. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A rather lame comedy where mason contrives to sue the press by making them make some lies about him in order to get a certain ladies hand in marriage. Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine An ingenious British comedy, sluggish in tempo but amusing nonetheless. Oct 21, 2019 Full Review Dwight MacDonald Esquire Magazine As directed by Guy Hamilton, it is just reasonably good entertainment -- sporadically funny, but lacking in consistent style.
