One bleak winter during the Great Depression, city kid Rusty (George Parry) is sent to stay on his grandparents' (Jason Robards, Eva Marie Saint) Minnesota farm. He finds it hard adapting to rural life, and to the withering anger of his gruff grandfather, for whom Rusty is a painful memory of the son (Bryan Englund) who died in World War I. Grandfather and grandson are eventually brought together when they haul their family melodeon to the local church as a gift on Christmas morning.

John H Jan 1 This an emotional experience. I watch this every Christmas and know I will cry. The production values - sound, lighting, screen resolution - are from TV in the eighties, but the story is an emotional classic, the writing is good and heartfelt, and the acting is very moving. Jason Robards and Eva Marie Saint are among the finest actors we have ever had, and they are at their best here. Joanne Woodward is also moving in the brief but important role she plays of a woman in the Depression having to send her child away because she can't feed him. George Perry, who plays the kid, is a beautiful kid here and plays his part well. See more Read all reviews
