Elizabeth Kerr The Hollywood Reporter Rao has an eye for kooky irony and knows how to get the most from his actors, and he clearly has a few things to say about modern China, but his ambition occasionally exceeds his grasp. Nov 27, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The Chinese film "A Cool Fish" is one of those bold genre collisions of crime, comedy and pathos that either carries you along on its currents, or leaves you a disaffected bystander, and the latter is the more likely outcome here. Nov 15, 2018 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat Why see A Cool Fish? Good question, I don't know. Its plot, action, and acting are underwhelming. Rated: 4/10 Dec 17, 2018 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Sunday Age A mix of parallel missteps offset by hard but unassuming social commentary that slowly comes to the fore even as the improbable storylines are tied together. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 9, 2018 Full Review John Berra Screen International Aiming for a mix of postmodern caper and grassroots social commentary, it's a hectically plotted misfire that comes up short on both fronts. Audience Member LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 49 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite a heartwarming movie by my opinion. The humor was not forced and the characters worked really well together. The movie did a great job of tying together all the stories of the different characters. Definitley a good film to watch. 11/10 would see again. I'm not sure why this movie has such bad reviews on RT, if you like foriegn movies this is one of the best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A Cool Fish is an original comedy with a rather absurd characteristic manifested by Sichuan dialect, which is a significant cultural aspect of this film that cannot be easily translated and fathomed by foreigners. The main characters depicted by the film are quite realistic and attractive without using pretentious mushy plots and stereotypes of the poor. The absurdity of specific plots, say the robbery scene, brings about a rather humorous atmosphere. Too bad that I'm not a professional, that I cannot present a convincing review with academic knowledge. However, I hope the critics can be less condescending and a little more modest towards Chinese culture. There is clearly a cultural gap in between that thwart this film to attain a higher score. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Didn't expect much from the film, as none of the actors are famous. But it turned out to be such a good film! Even my partner, who doesn't speak Chinese, really enjoyed it. Very funny, yet touching story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A beam of hope shining beyond the fear of death. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
