Beginning in 1990, muralist and sculptor Salvador González transformed a two-block-long alley in central Havana from a dangerous slum into a religious shrine and music/performance-art space using little more than found objects, paint and patience. Since then, González has taken his brightly painted murals around the world, blending traditional Afro-Cuban elements with Roman Catholic symbolism, as well as the surrealist influences of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.
