Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Call it a dark farce, human comedy or wartime satire. But however you slice it, the ill-conceived morality tale "A Farewell to Fools" is a bust. Apr 3, 2014 Full Review Brent Simon Shockya.com An extremely low-boil wartime farce, content to wring quiet smiles and silent laughs, that more or less works as a sort of lightly affected, darkly comedic parable. Rated: C+ Apr 8, 2014 Full Review Roger Moore Tribune News Service Despite the presence of Depardieu and Keitel, not nearly foolish enough. Rated: 2/4 Apr 6, 2014 Full Review Michael Nordine L.A. Weekly That loneliest of creatures: the comedy that inspires almost no laughs. Apr 4, 2014 Full Review Shannon M. Houston Paste Magazine Dreyer's work is still an enjoyable story that ultimately triumphs as sweet little comedy that doesn't make any attempts to shake up the world of historical cinema. Audience Member Not a hint to be a comedy. Boring as hell! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member The great Depardieu in a simple parable. (Also known as A Hero's Choice). It may not be earth-shattering but it is affecting, and Depardieu is touching as the village idiot. I re-assessed it after learning of the cast's dissatisfaction with the changes made afterwards, especially the ending. I agree I was expecting a different ending and the original ending was necessary to make the parable complete. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I couldn't understand the movie begin to end because each scenes seemed to be patchy. For instance, nothing happened after the boy hid German's motorcycle. Who killed the German? Why he tried to suicide after stop the war? ... I have many question, but they don't seem to solve even if I watch the movie again. On the whole, there weren't any surprised in the movie.
