If you enjoy classic novels brought to the screen in a way that feels like reading the novel (not easy to pull off), this film is for you. Very interesting character study of a man who can't control his pride and ego and how this blocks his path to success.

This is a very interesting movie, but somewhat difficult to watch. It involves an unusual understanding of complex human beings and how they evolve. And it is set in an interesting period of Danish history. I learned from this movie and found it gripping. The female romantic lead is incredibly beautiful and appealing.

Intense, stirring and finally heart-wrenching period epic gives a vivid portrayal of a young talented man whose pride and obstinacy boycotts his opportunities despite all the goodness and candor others offer him; wonderfully staged and photographed with a great ensemble.
