Critics Consensus

A Hologram for the King amiably ambles through a narrative desert, saved by an oasis of a performance from the ever-dependable Tom Hanks.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Tykwer is happy to let the journey of his main character speak movingly for itself; and in the process the veteran director brings forth a motion picture I'm going to happily treasure for a long time to come. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 11, 2016 Full Review David Stratton The Australian You never know quite where it's going, and in an era of so much cinematic predictability that's a welcome attribute. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 29, 2016 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard For all the high-tech lingo, there's nothing new to feel or see. Rated: 2/5 May 22, 2016 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Tykwer and Hanks have made a film with familiar ideas and sentimentalities, all presented in a comical, romantic, and always enjoyable package that never overreaches to achieve its significance, even amid its many metaphors. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Their distance from and contempt for the restive masses make Tykwer and his ilk retreat further into themselves. Trey W Never knew this movie was a thing. If you enjoy Tom Hanks, it's worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/29/23 Full Review Esteban G I'n not a native english speaker. Forgive my unforced errors. It's a good and nice story: ¿do you want more? Too many people didn't understand the movie. First of all: the beginnig. Everyone have to pay attention to the fast appeareance of Hanks performing the Talking Heads: it's a brick on your head. It's a moving and original love story, independently of the age of the characters. Naturally narrated: without any piece out of place. A loving father. A short and interesting view from life in an arabic kingdom. All the characters fit with the excelent script and direction. A second time-view of the film will lose the fillings and original emotions. But I watched it again. Googbye. P.D. If you don't know who the Talking Heads where, search the song "When the days go by". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/07/23 Full Review Gary C A big fan of Tom Hanks but didn't enjoy this at all....quite silly and pointless Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/06/23 Full Review Nicholas V Surly not one of the best movies I saw but I really enjoy the Saudi-Arabien Atmosphere with all it's modern world problems. Tom Hanks acting was nothing special but also not bad. Still something catches me that I want to see this film more than once. 3,5/5 Stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/23 Full Review T K Watched this for Tom Hanks in an easy to watch, meditative, and somewhat surreal piece set in Saudi Arabia. Don't expect big laughs or deep soul stirring moments. Reminded me of Lost in Translation but more watchable. Indulge if you just like Tom Hanks...
