A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Playing out a nightmare scenario with nerve-wracking plausibility, Kathryn Bigelow's masterfully-constructed A House of Dynamite is an urgent thriller that's as distressing as it is riveting.

Barry Hertz Globe and Mail A tremendously frustrating exercise in bait-and-switch white-knuckleism that is all the more disappointing coming from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow. Oct 20, 2025 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com  Bigelow has a firm grip on us from the very start, and if the ending isn’t entirely satisfying I don’t know what the alternative would be. I feel as helpless as the movers and shakers on screen who are faced with making nearly impossible choices Oct 20, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Bigelow (Point Break, Zero Dark Thirty) is the ideal director for this story. Her visual technique is masterful, constantly compressing detail and capturing intimate responses. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2025 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Its message of danger is potent, helping to carry a sometimes iffy viewing experience for a film that’s functional, but could’ve been perfectly rattling in its lasting impact. Rated: B- Oct 21, 2025 Full Review Paula Farmer culturevulture.net It is a political/military thriller that will have audiences on the edge of their seats from the first frame to the last… and more than likely shouting at the screen when all is said and done. Oct 21, 2025 Full Review Nicolás Delgadillo Knotfest Kathryn Bigelow’s most unabashedly popcorn thriller to date. Oct 21, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Eileen E Brilliant! Complex interwoven government and military interactions responding to a missile threat that couldn’t be identified or stopped. May go again tomorrow! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Steven Great Editing! Rashomon on steroids! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Joshua R “A House of Dynamite” is a superb procedural thriller that favors observation over conventional plotting. Like Paul Greengrass’s “United 93,” it adopts a verité, process-first approach: tension comes from watching professionals confront the unimaginable and work their systems in real time. There are no traditional leads, no tidy arcs, just the relentless mechanics of response. The ensemble is excellent, the direction precise, and the overall effect chillingly credible. If you can, see it in a theater. SPOILERS BELOW * * * * * * * * * Spoiler thoughts I keep seeing, “Great film… until the end.” That misses the point. Bigelow isn’t interested in spoon-feeding you an answer; she’s dramatizing the machinery that precedes one. We don’t witness the president’s final call because the film isn’t about the ultimate outcome. It’s about people, not movie heroes, doing their jobs under maximum pressure. A definitive resolution would create false closure. Holding the outcome in suspension is the film’s power. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Will Complete waste of time and a failure of a film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review Eli R The acting and directing is good, but this is basically half of a story Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review Colton K This would’ve been one of the best movies of the year if it had a linear narrative structure and a better ending.
