As children, Donald Branch Booth (Timothy Hutton), his sister (Lauren Peterson) and his brother (Paul Regina) are abandoned by their parents and sent to live in foster homes. All three are sent to different homes, and they become estranged from one another. Now, as a young man, Donald wants to find his brother and sister. An obstacle course of bureaucratic red tape stands in his way, but Donald is helped by Lillian (Brenda Vaccaro), a sympathetic social worker.
