Critics Consensus

A Night in Old Mexico gives Robert Duvall a too-rare starring showcase -- then frustratingly wastes it on a contrived story that's often unworthy of his talents.

It's fairly plain that "A Night in Old Mexico" is a vehicle for Duvall, and as such it's thoroughly enjoyable; watching him is a genuine treat. Go to Full Review

Duvall can justify it all, he's just that kind of actor, but "A Night in Old Mexico" hasn't worked hard enough to give him a story worthy of his talents. In many cases, he is acting all alone up there. Go to Full Review

The director Emilio Aragn wisely trains the camera on Mr. Duvall. "A Night in Old Mexico" is his baby, and he rocks it. Go to Full Review

While Duvall will always be a welcome screen presence, this isn't a vehicle worthy of his time or ours. Go to Full Review

Red's personal journey remains a fun ride, a feat due as much to Duvall as to the script, but Gally's own coming of age portion of the tale falls flat. Go to Full Review

Robert W Nov 4 You know, I watched this flick the other day that really had me hooked. It started off so strong, with a plot that was actually pretty engaging. I was genuinely into where it was going, thinking it was shaping up to be a real winner. Then, bam, the ending just completely took a left turn. It felt like the writers suddenly forgot what movie they were making. Everything they had built up just dissolved in those last few scenes. Honestly, it was a bit of a bummer after such a promising start. I kept waiting for it to make sense, but it never really did. See more Renee R 12/03/2024 I’m a huge fan of Robert Duvall, however, I had never seen this movie. He was perfectly cast as Red. I really enjoyed the story, the acting and the ending. A must see if you love Robert Duvall movies See more Don W 11/05/2024 Shallow script and a lazy self-indulgent performance by Duvall. He reminded of his portrayal as "Sonny" in "The Apostle". Boring and predictable. See more Laurie S @Karlwinters 11/03/2024 Despite being 82 when he made this, Duvall still delivered a solid performance. I'm not sure the choice of actor playing the lad was right. I enjoyed it. See more Nicolas M 11/01/2023 This is a comically bad movie. The script and direction are dismal and only Duvall does anything like acting. In fairness to the rest of the cast, it's impossible to imagine that they could do anything meaningful with this rubbish. See more 12/14/2020 DuVall is like a man trying to sow his last wild oat in mexico when his land is being sold off in the states. Takes his grandson with him for a women and booze - when they discover there's 100k in their backseat. A waste of DuValls skills on a predictable plot. See more Read all reviews
