Critics Consensus

A Night in Old Mexico gives Robert Duvall a too-rare starring showcase -- then frustratingly wastes it on a contrived story that's often unworthy of his talents.

Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com It's fairly plain that "A Night in Old Mexico" is a vehicle for Duvall, and as such it's thoroughly enjoyable; watching him is a genuine treat. Jun 2, 2014 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com Duvall can justify it all, he's just that kind of actor, but "A Night in Old Mexico" hasn't worked hard enough to give him a story worthy of his talents. In many cases, he is acting all alone up there. Rated: 1/4 May 16, 2014 Full Review Daniel M. Gold New York Times The director Emilio Aragn wisely trains the camera on Mr. Duvall. "A Night in Old Mexico" is his baby, and he rocks it. May 15, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com While Duvall will always be a welcome screen presence, this isn't a vehicle worthy of his time or ours. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Mark R. Leeper Mark Leeper's Reviews the story is driven forward by far too many coincidences Rated: 6/10 Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Rob Hunter Film School Rejects Red's personal journey remains a fun ride, a feat due as much to Duvall as to the script, but Gally's own coming of age portion of the tale falls flat. Nicolas M This is a comically bad movie. The script and direction are dismal and only Duvall does anything like acting. In fairness to the rest of the cast, it's impossible to imagine that they could do anything meaningful with this rubbish. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review kevin c Robert Duvall plays an elderly Texas rancher who travels to Mexico with his grandson when the two pick up the wrong hitchhikers who they abandon on the side of the road only to discover later in Mexico that they have the hitchhikers bag full of money in their car. That's when the trouble begins. Duvall is excellent to watch as a cantankerous old cowboy determined to find a way to keep his newly found money. Great little movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member DuVall is like a man trying to sow his last wild oat in mexico when his land is being sold off in the states. Takes his grandson with him for a women and booze - when they discover there's 100k in their backseat. A waste of DuValls skills on a predictable plot. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Never really gives the knockout punch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/18 Full Review Audience Member Even Robert Duvall couldn't save this turkey. We've seen this plot many times before- good guys stumble on bad guy's loot. Hijinks ensue. The twist is that the old guy gets the hottie, but this took suspension of disbelief too far for me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member On the eve of losing his home and land an elderly Texas rancher (Robert Duvall) puts off suicide when a grandson he never met before shows up at his door. He decides to hit the road for Mexico in order to live it up one last time with alcohol and the company of loose women but the pair run afoul of the Mexican drug cartel when they unknowingly wind up with a hundred and fifty thousand dollars of their drug money. A fun film that is a great vehicle for Duvall which highlights his vast talent, the films big downfall is the poor acting of Jeremy Irvine as the grandson, he desperately needs more acting lessons.
