Ian Freer Empire Magazine Strongly performed by a fresh-faced cast, A Paris Education is familiar and doesn't completely grip, but is an enjoyable celebration all the good things in life; films, arguing about films, friendship, love, politics and Paris. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's the sort of thing that I usually roll over for. But there isn't much in the way of lightness or plausibility. Rated: 2/5 Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Scott Tobias NPR Honest, reflective, a little pretentious, and completely at peace with its own modesty. It may be a very French film, but it's not a whiny one. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Carmen Paddock One Room With A View While its slow pace and self-reflexive focus sometimes lose engagement, spending two leisurely hours with idealistic students is a pleasure. Rated: 3/5 Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Allan Hunter The List A sombre, absorbing portrait of young lives filled with a sense of endless possibility. Rated: 3/5 Feb 10, 2020 Full Review Fergus Henderson Battle Royale With Cheese Despite its self-imposed limitations (and the strong whiff of sexism throughout), it does somehow achieve a modest greatness. Audience Member This French film, written and directed by Jean Paul Civeyrac, will most likely appeal to only a certain slice of cinephile. At nearly two and half hours in length and beautifully shot in black and white, the movie follows the journey of Etienne (Andranic Manet) as he leaves his girlfriend and family behind in Lyon to attend film school in Paris. The film is heavily dialogue driven and, at times, comes across as pretentious and intellectually moralizing, but it also contains discussions on films, literature, and the human condition that I found quite interesting. I was engaged enough to want to know how the young protagonist here would end up in his grappling with relationships, career, and his own self-doubts. Overall, as mentioned, this film will certainly not appeal to everyone but for those that like these types of French films there are rewards to be found here.
