Critics Consensus

Led by a scene-stealing turn from Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain is a powerfully funny, emotionally resonant dramedy that finds writer-director-star Jesse Eisenberg playing to his strengths on either side of the camera.

Richard Brody New Yorker It’s a strange movie -- far better as a concept than as a drama, though the concept is strong enough to provide a sense of inner experience, making up for what the outer, onscreen experience lacks. Nov 8, 2024 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine What’s most wonderful about the movie is its radiant generosity. Eisenberg’s performance is terrific, muted and hyperkinetic in all the right ways. But most often, he’s subtly directing attention to his co-star. Culkin is extraordinary. Nov 7, 2024 Full Review Manohla Dargis New York Times This sense of awareness, that these are guys you like and maybe even know, is crucial to the movie and how it uses intimacy to fortify its realism. Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Kenneth R. Morefield 1More Film Blog That David knows [that Benji is in pain] all along rather than suddenly discovering it in an Oscar-bait epiphany is to the film’s credit and what keeps it, for me, on the positive side of rotten/fresh line. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 11, 2024 Full Review Lisa Laman Culturess Despite dealing with such heavy material, A Real Pain is an unexpectedly soothing movie. Nov 9, 2024 Full Review Eric Marchen Rogers TV As far as sophomore efforts go, the Oscar-nominated star of The Social Network has proven adept at dysfunctional dynamics set against severe scenarios. robin g Took an unexpected turn into something that could be very heavy or Evan maudlin and made it accessible and funny as heck. Kieran Culkin is masterful and Jesse eisenberg knows exactly how to exploit the natural dynamic of superego and id. Loved it. Bravo, fellas. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review jmg This is so well done all the way around: the writing, the directing, the acting, the story! I highly recommend it it's a great piece of work. in my opinion award-winning. Both leads tremendous in their own way Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Paula S Movie had no depth or passion. Plot very thin. Acting especially Kieran Culkin who played the same character on Succession with different dialogue Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Stephanie L Very thoughtful movie that I’m still thinking about. Excellent performances by both leads. Culkin was exceptional. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review jeffrey s This was a moving film with many layers. It wasnt just fun thankfully. It had several serious messages which enhance growth. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review fran k Funny, serious, beautifully acted.
