Critics Consensus

Led by a scene-stealing turn from Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain is a powerfully funny, emotionally resonant dramedy that finds writer-director-star Jesse Eisenberg playing to his strengths on either side of the camera.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) There are moments when you can imagine how the movie might gain in depth if it spiralled out of control rather than remaining a neat equation, but this never seems likely. Eisenberg is more of a David than a Benji, in other words. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com Jesse Eisenberg has nothing to prove; he has already staked his claim as an actor, writer, and director. But A Real Pain digs deeper than he ever has before—and it’s a really good movie Nov 24, 2024 Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic Eisenberg’s direction is perfect — and a perfect match for Culkin’s performance. Rated: 5/5 Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Preston Barta Denton Record-Chronicle It’s a story of growth and change, and how the affection we once received as children can be replaced in adulthood. 'A Real Pain' is a deeply relatable and nuanced film, brought to life by powerful performances. Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com Proves you can be a real pain but still be lovable. Rated: 7/10 Dec 20, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film I do find the thematic underbelly of this film so fascinating because there's a lot of truth to how sometimes we find ourselves stuck in realizing the depths of each other's pain. LWatts Its impossible to look away from Kieran Culkins performance. It contrasts and compliments Jesse Eisenbergs nicely. The film tackles deep and serious topics with an attitude that is amusing, but sincere. Its nice to find a film about people in a world oversaturated with IP. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review uncledonnienyc Perfect for TV..Not sure what all the buzz is about. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Michelle Miller Very good acting. Well developed main characters. Very relatable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Victor L As the title implies, and without giving too much away, this is a film about coming to terms with pain, both past and present. It’s a perfectly balanced film- touching, funny, and historic. I highly recommend!
