Critics Consensus

Undeniably slight yet thoroughly charming, A Royal Night Out uses a fascinating historical footnote as a springboard into a fun dramedy diversion.

Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine A Royal Night Out goes the zany romantic-comedy route in its fictional depiction of two British princesses partying with commoners at the end of World War II. Rated: 3/5 Aug 2, 2016 Full Review Steve Davis Austin Chronicle In the end, it's difficult to reconcile the young Elizabeth depicted here with the monarch whose reign spans the longest in British history. The two just don't match up. Rated: 2/5 Dec 10, 2015 Full Review Rex Reed Observer A Royal Night Out is a film of enormous charm, texture and good will, thanks largely to the three leads. Rated: 3/4 Dec 10, 2015 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog A sweet and charming dramedy with a shade of Roman Holiday. Sarah Gadon is terrific as young Elizabeth, able to capture the future queen’s calm countenance and earthy spirit. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 12, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Some may disapprove of seeing our queen portrayed in this sort of "Carry On", but as entertainment, this is a delightful treat that's well worth seeking out. Feb 15, 2022 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) A movie as silly, charming and utterly disposable as you allow it to be. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 24, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Ashley H A Royal Night Out is a decent film. It is about Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret who are allowed out to join the celebrations on V.E. Day 1945. Sarah Gadon and Bel Powley give good performances. The script is a little slow in places. Julian Jarrold did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama and humor. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Audience Member A promising premise, and the movie starts out OK. But then the plot and writing just becomes too trite, too predictable, and too unrealistic. By mid-movie it's like they turned over the writing to a bunch of 7th graders. It'll pass the time like a weak made-for-TV movie, but that's about it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review brian o A very promising story, but the picture itself is a complete mess, just a hash of scenes about nothing, Nothing happens, nobody changes. Princess Elizabeth meets -- gasp! -- a normal person. That's the entire plot, other than Princess Margaret runs off with cads and gets drunk, which would pretty much be a documentary of her life. A waste of time. I don't know who hated it more -- me or my wife. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Charming plot, cool music Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review tony h Great fun and an absolute joy to behold.. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review eyemovie s I've just seen this delightful and decidedly unsentimental "retelling" of the royal version of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". After reading some of the other negative reviews. It seems that some critics are more turned off by the idea of royalty instead of focusing on the acting and story. What drew me to this film was the tagline, "Inspired by true events". After seeing the film, I can easily see HRH Elizabeth and her now deceased sister, Margaret, running around the streets of London as young women. I found the experiences to be authentic, especially since truth is often stranger than fiction. Why shouldn't they end up in a brothel and seedy nightclub? This was a time before video cameras everywhere and over saturated media coverage of celebrities. At heart, this is a coming-of-age story. Amazing things happen and so do ugly things. The director is not trying to peel off the facade of the royals nor thinly conceal their shortcomings as humans. He is telling it as one could imagine two sisters in a new city -one of the biggest- depending on the kindness of strangers at a time when strangers were expected to be kind to young ladies. I also liked the fast paced action from the palace scenes and around London. It's not at all dull or plodding. The acting of the entire cast was superb. There were no scene stealers. The actors filled their roles to the point that you really felt you were watching Queen E, British G.I.'s, etc. and an assortment of memorable acquaintances-as if you're being introduced around. The tone of this film is light and lively. The focus is firmly on the exposure of two sisters to a new world and how they handle it. As history has shown, Princess Margaret did not adjust that well. This film is suitable for everyone. I would especially urge families with daughters to watch it and discuss how they would handle being "let loose" or chaperoned constantly. An excellent movie, which kept its focus without competing with other "royal" films or crossing the line into the absurd. It was a funny, poignant and fresh look at the wide-eyed human side of royal life! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
