What to Know

Critics Consensus

A pointless shocker and societal allegory, a film whose imagery is so gruesome as to leave you scarred for life...or rolling your eyes for 100 minutes.

The rare piece of transgressive art that's more grimly meditative than satirical or allegorical, A Serbian Film's most daring aspect may be the muddle of soul-searching it demands from its audience. Go to Full Review

A Serbian Film still rips apart our morals, and deepthroats us with them until we vomit our own regrets. For me it still holds the title as most nasty, disturbing, controversial and fucked-up horror movie to ever exist. Go to Full Review

A Serbian Film seems to have more in mind than it conveys on the outer surface. But it remains effective, one gruesome way or another. Go to Full Review

John C @JC00773202 23h I'd give "A Serbian Film" negative points if I could. It's less a film and more a psychological attack vector to try and cause harm to anyone gullible enough to turn it on. The most charitable interpretation I could give is to call it pseudointellectual edgelording at its vilest. The only function it serves is to make the world incrementally worse by demoralising a few impressionable people and coarsening the culture in some incremental way. As art, this is unmitigated worthless trash. See more Alain E @AlainE 1d A masterpiece of nihilistic cinema. It absolutely lived up to its reputation of being disgusting. Mind you it is very well photographed and interpreted, but the point is what exactly? When you think you have seen the worst, then comes the last scene where even worse acts are implied. The version shown on Fandango appears to be shortened by about 7 minutes and I don’t think I will seek out the complete version with all the gore included. The movie is carefully constructed employing even a color code. The majority has a bluish discoloration that I thought was a technical defect, until it was lifted in some scenes. I have no idea what it symbolized. Watch it if you have a strong stomach. (I heard about it in a Reddit discussion about difficult to watch movies that also included Schindler’s list!) It goes where no movie would normally go because it's low and uses a "message" as a facade to cover up the fact it's really just to shock people. Edgelord directing at it's finest. Anyone saying this is transgressive and meaningful art or that it's good is either mentally fucked up, gullible, or just full of shit and maybe even all combined. Trust me, there isn’t any. Truly disturbing and worthy of its poor rating. Even as a curio, do not watch! . See more Read all reviews
