Critics Consensus

A pointless shocker and societal allegory, a film whose imagery is so gruesome as to leave you scarred for life...or rolling your eyes for 100 minutes.

Joseph Jon Lanthier Slant Magazine The rare piece of transgressive art that's more grimly meditative than satirical or allegorical, A Serbian Film's most daring aspect may be the muddle of soul-searching it demands from its audience. Rated: 3/4 May 21, 2011 Full Review Austin Chronicle Rated: 3/5 May 21, 2011 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times "A Serbian Film" revels in its sheer inventive awfulness and dares the viewer to find a more serious layer of meaning. Rated: 2.5/5 May 12, 2011 Full Review Zoe Rose Smith Zobo With A Shotgun A Serbian Film still rips apart our morals, and deepthroats us with them until we vomit our own regrets. For me it still holds the title as most nasty, disturbing, controversial and fucked-up horror movie to ever exist. Rated: 5/5 Sep 14, 2019 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore A Serbian Film seems to have more in mind than it conveys on the outer surface. But it remains effective, one gruesome way or another. Rated: 3.5/5 May 7, 2019 Full Review Daniel Green CineVue Any remnants of socio-political commentary from the film's initial scenes are ultimately washed away in a sea of sweat, blood and semen, leaving behind only the broadest, most unsophisticated of allegorical metaphors. Luke R Prepare yourself for some hardcore stuff! 😳 In a sick strange way, this movie shows the obvious evil that exists in this world. It does NOT praise any of the depravity! The main character is a bit crazy of course and a weak man. He has some fleeting standards and a tiny bit of morals of things he personally would never do in life or on film such as extreme violence or anyone under age. It made him truly uncomfortable and he wanted out of this new well paying venture, but he should have went directly to the police once he saw what this was becoming. This movie is not for the faint of heart, so be warned. But if you watch it, watch it knowing there is still good on this planet trying to stop this evil. And you may have to shower away the doom and gloom mood after seeing this! 😐 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Charlotte H I challenge anyone to watch this without thinking that the lead actor is David Spade. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review MCMLXI X This isn't a film for a casual watch, and neither is it a film if you don't understand or are not interested in the complexities of human behaviour - especially the depraved lengths ordinary people will go to when desperate . It is hard hitting - it is meant to be. It is a mirror of humanity. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review jaxen t 10/10 child friendly, i let my kids watch and now they seem happier than ever, would lets the watch it again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Amelia R Vile. I cannot fathom why humans have decided to push the boundaries of what is morally acceptable to this extent. We've lost touch with what's acceptable to view. Someone finds the bar because we've gone too far below. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Will M It seems like this movie was disturbing for the sole purpose of being disturbing. I was laughing throughout a lot of it because it was gross to a satirical point. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Read all reviews
