Desperate times call for desperate measures, so losing soccer coach Gordon McCloud (Robert Duvall) accepts the signing of Jackie McQuillan (Ally McCoist), a player with undeniable talent but a reputation as a team-killer. The team needs a player of star quality, or it may have to relocate from their tiny town to a larger market. Furthermore, McQuillan happens to be the coach's son-in-law, and McCloud hasn't exactly enjoyed the most harmonious relationship with his daughter.

May 6, 2002 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Not as distinctive or even as humorous as its needs to be to stand out, but it has clearly been made with affection and care. Shaken N Great film and great to see Coisty doing so well in the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Steve D Everything was a bit too over the top for me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review rory s A nice film starring Duvall the great actor and a Scottish football great. I thought the acting was good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Really bad but really great at the same time!! WTF is the fish all about lol Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The Scottish Cup in reality has provided fairy tale stories of wee teams that made it to the final - in recent years Gretna comes to mind. Small town club, wealthy benefactor owner, punches away above its weight. Gretna's 2006 Cup final ended in glorious failure as they took Premier Division Hearts to extra time before going down on penalties. So the idea is not as far fetched as it might appear.McCoist is a natural as a first time actor, with the added irony for Scottish viewers that this real life Rangers legend in the film plays a former Celtic star. Noteable for Duvall's valiant yet disastrous efforts at a Scottish accent, the film is also poignant in that it's one of the final screen appearances of that fine actress, the late Morag Hood. She delivers a typically accomplished performance given the limitations of the script.Good too to see assorted veterans from the Scottish football divisions, including Owen Coyle, Andy Smith, Ian McCall, Didier Agthe and Derek McInnes, as well as assorted TV pundits and hacks who again will be well known to a Scottish audience. They do help bring authenticity to the film's strongest feature, its football action. An entertaining enough pictire down to its inevitable finale. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member As cheesy as cheesy gets, but a wonderful who's who of Scottish football in the 80s and 90s. I'm not entirely sure where Duvall went to learn his accent right enough! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
