Audience Member Absolutely horrible. Not the movie itself but the content/idiots it covers. The Afghan advisers are total POGs who are completely lost in the sauce and these pilots, OMG talk about tools. How do they ever accomplish anything? If this is an accurate account of military pilots, no wonder ground troops are neccessary... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member a fresh movie that is about real people and real footage. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Above The Best recounts the events of a war fought in Korengal Valley ("The Valley of Death"), Afghanistan with the use of archival footage taken from body cameras that the soldiers wore. To supplement this footage, director David Salzberg also included talking heads interviews to go into further detail on specific events and explain the rationalizations and thought-processes behind the quick decisions that had to be made. With the use of the personal retellings in this film, I was able to place myself in the shoes of a soldier and begin to empathize with them for the way they would feel being in the situation they were in, and it allowed me to gain a new perspective on war and post-war life. I can't help but urge you to see this film for yourself! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Hearing the testimonies and seeing the actual action experienced in combat through archival footage from the Afghanistan war, Above The Best, is genuinely an extraordinary film hearing the actual stories from the heroes themselves. These soldiers, truly above the best, take the audience through their battle without all the gore that is usually seen in typical Hollywood war movies. I enjoyed how the director, David Salzberg, created a narrative of how these soldiers will lay down their lives for brothers that they have never met, showing the innate loyalty and valor in these humans. Definitely a must see, I'd have to recommend this film as an appreciation of the service of these heroes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Above The Best, director David Salzber uses the documentary genre to give justice and respect to the stories of the soldiers who fought the Taliban in Afghanistan. Through the use of jump cuts during Daniel Flores, US Army Apache Pilot, testimony, I gained a better understanding of the disorientation felt by soldiers during missions. More importantly, this directing style revealed more about the psyche of a soldier once they have returned home and are left with the memories of battle. After seeing this film, I gained a new perspective as to what it takes to be deemed an American soldier, whilst highly enjoying the level of immersion and altogether inspiring mood. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Above The Best is a moving story of sacrifice and how putting the group before the individual can make a big impact on a mission. Each soldier in this film explains how in crisis their focus was on continuing to help their fellow man, instead of themselves. That act of loyalty to the unit provided everyone with the capabilities of continuing on and finishing what they came to do. Above The Best is able to take the memories of these great American heroes and provide the audience with a compelling story of valor and sacrifice.
