06/28/2020 This movie is awful. The acting is so bad. The storyline lacks any depth and the characters of the historical figures are utterly flat.I am always amazed at how it is possible that a director does not see these things. I mean it's a historical drama but the language spoken is utterly 21st century Dutch. The main character Frank Lammers's character as Michiel de Ruyter is totally superficial lacking any passion and shows us nothing as to what kind of man the protagonist was.Of course, it's a Dutch movie so we will be seeing a tit or two flying about for no purpose whatsoever. The slow-mo shots of f.i the sea-wars get so boring because they are merely gimmicks to show off what's possible with cinematography nowadays but..a movie like this is fun to watch...you'll roll of your couch laughing....maybe that's the power of this monster? See more 02/07/2018 Frank Lammers is such an unappealing man. Every time his wife (played by Sanna Langelaar) had to kiss him I wondered if the actress was getting a bonus check because she sure deserved one. So unappealing. Also he's no great shakes as an actor. The rest of the cast outshone him. The aforementioned Langelaar (who still deserves that extra money), Barry Atsma as the doomed-to-be-eaten Johan de Witt, even Egert-Jan Weeber's Wilhelm was a more complex character. I also wasn't very impressed with the filming of the battle scenes. Just a bunch of wood chips being tossed around. The ending was so heavy handed with all the slow motion shots of cannon balls. On the plus side Sanna had some amazing hairstyles I was quite envious of. A tip of the hat to the hairstylist on this work. And the costumes were quite nice. See more Read all reviews
