Claudio C May 18 Adrift in Manhattan (2007) Entwined Lives (11,699 –17 May 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In New York City, the lonely Simon Colon (Victor Rasuk) is a quiet and shy twenty-year-old photographer that works in the photo shop owned by Mr. Sneider (Richard Petrocelli) with the attendant Melanie (Nicole Leach), and lives with his controlling mother Marta Colon (Marlene Forte). When Mr. Sneider lends a powerful lens to Simon, he photographs the ophthalmologist Rose Phipps (Heather Graham) on the street and becomes obsessed by her. Rose is a lonely woman separated from her husband Mark Phipps (William Baldwin) after the death of their two-year-old son. She is also the doctor of the mail clerk and painter Tomasso Pensara (Dominic Chianese), who is a lonely man that came from Italy to the United States in 1958 and is going blind. The sad lives of these three lonely residents in New York entwins on the streets and subway. “Adrift in Manhattan” (2007) is a sad movie by Alfredo Rodriguez de Villa about lonely people in New York City. The plot is very sad and centered on three lead characters. Rose Phipps is a doctor that lost her two-year-old son and now lives a sad routine life separated from her husband, a poetry teacher. Her private life is affected when the young photographer Simon becomes obsessed by her, and her sex scene recalls “Summer of 42”. Simon is a photographer controlled by his mother that apparently will change his life after his encounter with Rose. Tomasso is a simple Italian man, who loves painting and has just found love with his colleague Isabel Parades (Elizabeth Peña) but is going blind. In the end, “Adrift in Manhattan” is a depressive movie recommended for very specific audiences. My vote is seven. While the romantic (?) story of the taciturn, creepy photographer/stalker is exactly as corny, cringey and uneasy as it sounds, the rest of the film, despite the largely predictable, familiar script, certainly has its moments, namely a handful of surprisingly well-executed scenes of moving realism and the very good performances of Heather Graham, Dominic Chianese and William Baldwin. Nevertheless, the aftertaste is that of an inability for any sort of distinctive, memorable closure. See more 10/01/2018 Pros I think the old man was the best part of the movie. I think his artwork is cool too. Cons She doesn't notice him following her around? She should have followed through with the police. You can't have someone follow you around the city like that even if it was innocent. He was clearly going through some mental problems which are not his fault, but you never know what people with mental problems are capable of if they're pushed. I mean, we the viewers know Simon is harmless but she doesn't and in real life we would have to assume the worst. And then she spots him at the park doing it again and she does nothing. I think it's ridiculous and it would never happen in New York. The movie is a little slow at times and it just ends without satisfaction. The side story with the ex-husband is really not interesting and would make no difference if taken out of the movie. The romances also felt unconvincing. All in all, the movie has a few nice moments set against the backdrop of Manhattan and it has the potential but it's all unsatisfying and none of it believable. See more 07/09/2015 A melancholy drama, Adrift in Manhattan is a cold and monotonous film. The story follows three New Yorkers, an artist losing his sight, a doctor who's lost her child, and an amateur photographer, who are all dealing with estrangement. Unfortunately the script is rather weak and doesn't focus on any of the characters long enough for the audience to connect with or care about them. And the directing is rather mundane, doing little to enhance the film or draw out its themes. While Adrift in Manhattan explores some interesting ideas, is poorly made and lacks a compelling story. See more 04/15/2013 Had potential, but falls short of being profound, emotional or interesting. Some nice moments but that's about it.
