Julia Wallace Village Voice You can't build a movie around lingering, soulful shots of the No. 1 train zooming up and down the West Side. Sep 25, 2007 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times An all-too-familiar wallow in urban woe and artfully photographed isolation. Rated: 2/5 Sep 24, 2007 Full Review Lou Lumenick New York Post ...overall, his [Alfredo De Villa's] latest flick is dramatically tepid. Rated: 2/4 Sep 21, 2007 Full Review Jamie Tipps Film Threat Adrift in Manhattan is a quietly moving film about alienation and connection. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 30, 2007 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Better directed than written, de Villa's meditation on loss, loneliness, and alientaion in urban New York is downbeat, slow, studied, and a bit pretentious, but it's nicely acted by the entire cast, particularly Victor Rasuk and Dominic Chianese. Rated: C+ Jan 25, 2007 Full Review Scott Weinberg Cinematical Throw a rock into any year's Sundance guide and you're guaranteed to hit at least two or three multi-pronged grave and oh-so-earnest weep-dramas like this one. Audience Member A mixed bag. While the romantic (?) story of the taciturn, creepy photographer/stalker is exactly as corny, cringey and uneasy as it sounds, the rest of the film, despite the largely predictable, familiar script, certainly has its moments, namely a handful of surprisingly well-executed scenes of moving realism and the very good performances of Heather Graham, Dominic Chianese and William Baldwin. Nevertheless, the aftertaste is that of an inability for any sort of distinctive, memorable closure. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Pros I think the old man was the best part of the movie. I think his artwork is cool too. Cons She doesn't notice him following her around? She should have followed through with the police. You can't have someone follow you around the city like that even if it was innocent. He was clearly going through some mental problems which are not his fault, but you never know what people with mental problems are capable of if they're pushed. I mean, we the viewers know Simon is harmless but she doesn't and in real life we would have to assume the worst. And then she spots him at the park doing it again and she does nothing. I think it's ridiculous and it would never happen in New York. The movie is a little slow at times and it just ends without satisfaction. The side story with the ex-husband is really not interesting and would make no difference if taken out of the movie. The romances also felt unconvincing. All in all, the movie has a few nice moments set against the backdrop of Manhattan and it has the potential but it's all unsatisfying and none of it believable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A melancholy drama, Adrift in Manhattan is a cold and monotonous film. The story follows three New Yorkers, an artist losing his sight, a doctor who's lost her child, and an amateur photographer, who are all dealing with estrangement. Unfortunately the script is rather weak and doesn't focus on any of the characters long enough for the audience to connect with or care about them. And the directing is rather mundane, doing little to enhance the film or draw out its themes. While Adrift in Manhattan explores some interesting ideas, is poorly made and lacks a compelling story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Had potential, but falls short of being profound, emotional or interesting. Some nice moments but that's about it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Adrift in Manhattan is a quietly moving film about alienation and connection. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Adrift in Manhattan is a quietly moving film about alienation and connection. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
