Nick M A man is given ample opportunity to learn how to live a happily married life with a woman he professes to genuinely love, and fails time and time again in this tedious exploration of toxic masculinity. Gloria Swanson and Wallace Reid both give decent performances, but the characters are one note and generally unlikeable, so there isn't much for them to chew other than gristle. It's about as disappointing a Cecil B. DeMille production as I can remember, and I'm shocked to see that it was written by Jeanie Macpherson. This probably isn't the fault of any of them, however, since the film was adapted from a previously popular stage play. According to box office numbers it was largely popular in its day, but it doesn't offer much in the 21st century. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Audience Member DeMille's film is a racy and daring look at unfaithfulness and that paranoid kind of tension that takes place in a relationship. It's also quite entertaining, quirky with its remarkable tongue in cheek humour and a good solid pace. The Affairs of Anatol, in short, is a good specimen of the kind of 'controversial' and 'immoral' films which were being made during the pre-production code era. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Your enjoyment of this will obviously depend on whether you like silents or not. As a look way back to the beginnings of narrative film making and a fashion show of what woman wore then this has some interest. It's also a rare chance to see the doomed Wallace Reid in one of his few existing films, he was deep in the thoes of morphine addiction when this was made and looks shockingly old when you realize he was only 29 when this was made he appears 50 minimum.
