Critics Consensus

Repeating the beats of better techno-horrors, AfrAId short circuits due to the clichéd software of its script and the uninspired hardware of its craft.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Crucially, Weitz grasps that the most unsettling thing about AIA’s real-world equivalents isn’t their alien novelty but the way they mirror human nature, revealing qualities in their designers and users that were present all along. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 12, 2024 Full Review Kyle Logan Chicago Reader Afraid is better than expected...and it largely succeeds as a fun genre exercise. If only its aspiration to “say something” didn’t keep it from being pure dumb fun. Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Dylan Roth Observer AfrAId is a poignant, artistic statement—evidence that humans are just as capable of mediocrity as the machines that will replace us.  Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 2, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media AI is a hot topic for horror, and there's plenty that could be done with it, but despite good characters and a promising setup, this film goes haywire with its silly, one-note third act. Rated: 2/5 Oct 4, 2024 Full Review Sean P. Means The Movie Cricket There’s not much to be done with a movie like “Afraid,” that sets up its technological boogeyman in such a hermetically sealed way that genuine terror — or any other non-algorithmic emotion — can’t penetrate. Rated: 2/4 Sep 30, 2024 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com Just enough "the future is here" stuff to creep out an audience. Rated: 6/10 Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Rich C The final scene gives this movie an extra star because its representative of how we all feel about AI. Were getting on board even though we know, it will likely be a dangerous trip into the unknown. The movie itself was entertaining, haunting and surprisingly relatable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Tarrelle This movie AFRAID was a definite like ! I enjoyed the exploring the idea of A.I in our potential future and the effect it may have . Actors did a great job convincing the audience & myself that this is beyond fantasy ! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Kera W Blumhouse produces another headscratcher horror film, but to my surprise, the film had all the elements of being very effective going from a good movie to an actual scary movie. John Cho is becoming a staple for technological horror genre and we are here for his emotional journey. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Anderson Thought it was a much better movie than what Rotten Tomatoes rating. Made me jump a few times. The storyline was good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Anthony A must see movie! Will knock your socks off! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review kristina l Creepy good. It's scary how much we rely on technology, but what happens if tech starts getting smarter than the people building it? It has some pretty good twists. Definitely makes you wonder about getting a completely smart house. 😄 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
