Jeff M I was pleasantly surprised to find myself becoming very involved and ultimately quite moved by this above-average television movie. Like most TV films, it will never be accused of being a stark and realistic portrait of its subject, but I love how everyone involved both in front of and behind the camera seem so connected to the based-on-a-true story. To be quite frank, I can't say that Martin really convinced me in her role as the deaf teenager, although she is giving it her all. The savior of this movie is Williams, one of my favorite underappreciated actresses and always such a warm presence onscreen. This performance is no exception, and she provides humor, strength and vulnerability - enhancing the role probably even more than it was written. It's always made me sad that she never got the attention or the opportunities of more well-known actresses of her peer group - she is an immense talent, and this well-intentioned TV movie, more than anything else, is a reminder of that.
