Karen Han CutPrintFilm The hard part is that it takes work, which isn't quite a message we associate with movies but which remains, as with the rest of the film, true to life. The resulting work is beautiful, and strikingly human. Rated: 10/10 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times Quiet revelations and fleeting poetry - a lottery ticket, we're reminded, is a piece of a dream - pleasingly ensue. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 15, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times As ever, the director has fashioned a lovely, appealing, lightly comic film that exists somewhere between late Ozu and early Spielberg. Rated: 4/5 Jun 13, 2017 Full Review Pieter-Jan Van Haecke Psychocinematography Kore-eda vividly explores the complexity of familial relations while touching gently upon the fundamental importance of treasuring small moments of happiness. Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com One of Kore-eda's most emotionally poignant films and strongest familial dramas to date, After the Storm is an absolute pleasure. Rated: 4/5 Sep 8, 2020 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly It's quiet, sweet, and surprisingly hopeful - just the sort of story you'd expect from Japanese maestro, Hirokazu Kore-eda. Kevin L This is not a film that's so typical of others I've seen by the brilliant Hirokazu Koreeda. It doesn't have the stylish atmosphere and pure passions of his great trilogy. There's not the tension of "The Third Murder" or "Maborosi". And the pacing is not like "Broker" or "The Shoplifters". But comparisons are largely odious. What is there is the story of a floundering detective, of sorts, trying to hard to stay above water and get back in good with his ex and their son. "After the Storm" is very much a slowburn. Packing was something of an issue. But I did appreciate the outright authenticity of the family and the details Koreeda provides to flesh out the lead character Ryota and his mother, Yoshiko, played with impressive skill and dedication by Hiroshi Abe and Kirin Kiki, respectively. Ryota is clearly a very decent guy, loving father, with still strong feelings for ex-wife Kyoko. But there's something of the screw-up in him, try as he might. I like how Koreeda's ending had the family all together, post typhoon, chasing down lottory tickets, with the sense that some reconciling has occurred and there's more light to go with this sweetness that followed. 3.4 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review isla s This is a somewhat thoughtful, slow paced Japanese family drama film. Its certainly not action packed but its not entirely boring either. The characters are nice enough and its a relatively easy watch but I'm not sure there's much else I can say about it really. If your a fan of Japanese films, then I'd recommend it, otherwise not so much. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member After the Storm can come across as mundane in storytelling and dialogue for much of its length, but a terrific final act and a wonderful performance from Kirin Kiki truly encapsulates the entire feature and leaves it rather a wholesome experience. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review freeson w Koreeda always knows how to make deep character portrayals that are calm on the surface but roiling underneath. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Grandma steals the show. But overall the movie felt a little bit incomplete Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member wooW i have watched already few times using boxxy software Its cool!
