Nigel Andrews Financial Times Hackford has an uncanny flair for thumping a story along at breakneck speed, ploughing through the most unyielding passages of plot exposition and the busiest shoals of plot twists. May 10, 2021 Full Review David Robinson Times (UK) The potential of the idea is sacrificed to a wild excess of plot and characters whose motives are generally as baffling as they are unpredictable. May 10, 2021 Full Review Derek Malcolm Guardian Alas it does not work, though Hackford, who made An Officer And A Gentleman, is the kind of director who always looks as if he is just about to make something interesting. May 10, 2021 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Despite the longueurs and the underlying callowness, I enjoyed Against All Odds, though I can't see it lasting the way Tourneur's film has. May 10, 2021 Full Review Daniel Barnes Dare Daniel Against All Odds has its moments, but too often the film plays less like an official remake of Out of the Past and more like an unofficial prequel to Tequila Sunrise. Rated: 3/5 Jun 9, 2019 Full Review Rob Thomas Capital Times (Madison, WI) A decent film noir, mostly because of Woods and Bridges. Rated: 3/5 Aug 18, 2005 Full Review Read all reviews

Tom R I think this is a great movie with a number of twists and turns with a great cast to keep you engaged, culminating with the final scene where the moment is captured by Phil Collins singing the title song, Against All Odds. I don't think there has ever been a movie where the final moment of the main characters angst at being a part are captured so brilliantly in a timeless song that is still heard on the radio today, 40 years after the movie came out. Ignore those reviews that just don't get the movie magic of a complicated love story that ends with a brilliant song capturing the angst of a love that can't be bridged until some later time, if ever... against all odds. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Sebastyen D C'est très mauvais. Scénario décousu et illogique, effet sonores qui tentent de combler le manque d'originalité du scénario, musique qui joue pendant les dialogues. Se prend au sérieux au point où ça en est risible. Au moins la toune est bonne. This is very bad. Illogical, disjointed script, sound effects trying to make up for the script's lack of originality, music playing over dialogue. Takes itself so seriously that it's laughable. At least the song is good. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 A beautifully flawed neo-noir remake of Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past, Against All Odds more than looks the part even through the most unyielding passages of plot exposition and the busiest shoals of plot twists. Directed with stunning flair by Taylor Hackford, despite the monotonous and the underlying callowness, the photography is simply gorgeous, all helped by a score that feels like it has been ripped right out of late-era Miami Vice. The performances more than make up for the often unlikeable characters, with both Jeff Bridges and James Woods delivering in their respective roles, Woods especially, although sadly Rachel Ward ultimately feels miscast despite her great chemistry with Bridges. The lasting legacy of this film for me is by far the fantastic title song by Phil Collins; I adore his music, his songs truly get to me, tackling every emotion simultaneously and Against All Odds is no exception to this, remaining not only one of Collins' definitive singles, but one of the 80s' best love songs. Even with its needlessly complex plot and forced ending, I enjoyed Against All Odds, it's far from perfect but its sheer beauty more than made up for its shortcomings. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Donald S it's a love story thriller, that I could see being revisited more because of the legalization of sports betting. If you are interested in an action movie that involves sports betting, crime and love, and this is for you. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Sarah R I'm not the type that goes Gaga when I see a man on the screen ; they go on about Brad Pitt and different ones ( they're alright) but after watching this beautiful, masculine man and the chemistry he had with his sensitive and sensual leading lady made all the others look common and kid like - just beautiful . It wasn't tacky, cheap and crude. For the past 40 years , sex scenes were - time to grab a bite or use the restroom) . It was real passion, just beautiful, like I've never seen. When I hear that song " Against all odds " I can't turn it off - especially if it's a video. The movie- was alright I guess, don't care. I just loved watching the beautiful chemistry they had. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review steve d Not really my cup of tea but it is really effective, and the song is amazing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
