Young female fighter pilots arrive to the frontline. They have different stories and different fates. They are getting older, falling in love and lose their closest ones as well as take their place in the world of men. The air has become their home. However, at war no one knows whose fate is to live and who is doomed to die.

An accomplished but far more conventional work than we might expect from German Jr, who has hitherto established himself as a master of unapologetically philosophical themes and densely detailed mise en scene. Go to Full Review

James B @SpoonLogic Jan 18 A refreshingly bleak take on what is often an overtly patriotic topic, Russia’s involvement in WW2 aka "The Great Patriotic War". Overtones of country before self and sacrifice as the highest form of valour persist. However, Air (2023) should not be shrugged off as just another pro-Russian war movie. Rather it shows the fleeting existence of young aviators flying out of date equipment in the worst conditions imaginable. Diegetic shots of scared young pilots with only the wind and consuming sadness to fill the tense void left by the absence of distraction. Air is almost calm in its lingering realism. Its filming style somewhat raw, unpolished, lending sincerity to what is shown. A fragmented story imparting a feeling of broken recollection & traumatic events. Anastasia Talyzina is a breath of fresh air. (No pun intended.) The cinematography and pacing won’t suit all audiences but for those who find a joy in stillness and disquiet, Air is certainly worth a watch. See more Read all reviews
