When a robbery in New Orleans ends in disaster, the mercurial burglar Dova (Matt Dillon) escapes with his cohorts to a seedy, nearby bar. Capturing all those inside, the criminals trade barbs with the establishment's feisty bartender Janet Boudreaux (Faye Dunaway). The pub becomes highly volatile, however, when the police encircle it; as it turns out, they were already there surveilling another of the bar's patrons, a suspected illicit arms trafficker named Guy Foucard (Viggo Mortensen).

Critics Consensus

Matt Dillon's intense performance is the best aspect of Albino Alligator, a mannered thriller that pantomimes the tropes of film noir to phony effect.

Ryan Gilbey Independent (UK) One of Spacey's most notable achievements is that he's managed to tease out that rare treasure: a great Matt Dillon performance. Horror fan 4 A great idea for a movie but not executed as it should have been. A great cast but clearly wasted. Tim Treakle Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Low budget Tarantino film Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/22 Full Review Audience Member Albino Alligator, the directorial debut of 1996's Best Supporting Oscar winner, Kevin Spacey, is a cagey, claustrophobic noir thriller highlighted by a few clever plot twists, some nicely- honed dialogue, and a half-dozen top-notch performances. Many will doubtless compare this movie to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, but, while there are similarities in plot, intent, and style, Albino Alligator is a more intimate film. If not for the car chase that opens the movie and sets up everything that follows, this could easily be mistaken for the screen adaptation of a play. In an era when Tarantino-flavored crime thrillers are becoming more commonplace, Albino Alligator manages to distinguish itself. For the most part, Christian Forte's script is smart, even if the characters aren't, and Spacey's direction is sure-handed. There's something darkly delightful about watching a movie like this, which, despite occasionally falling back on formulaic conventions, still manages to surprise its audience from time-to-time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this movie. It was exciting and dramatic...I still do not know why they did not to exit through the tunnel (I must have missed the exposition about why leaving out the back wasn't an option). The acting/dialogue involving the cops was not to my liking. The rest of the movie was fun. It was cool to see all the actors in the bar. There were a couple problems, but I found the movie worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Mediocre plot that fails to keep watchers on the edge of their seats with an ending that lets you down. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent character driven film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
