Audience Member I saw this movie for the first time in 1968, but was 12 years old. The only thing I remembered was, "Captain Kirk." I just re-watched it on YouTube. The production values were stunning for the time. The cast, writing and acting were unbelievable for a planned weekly series. Shatner shines. He looks great. His acting is better than most and his bareback riding scenes are awesome. However, as a Greek Orthodox Christian who went to high school in Iran the show was very difficult to watch from a historical perspective. I recognize it was only a movie/TV show not a documentary. But, the inaccuracies were so many to be intolerable. Just to name a few of the major mistakes. This show was as biased against Iranians as the movie "The 300." The Persians were described as brutal, soulless, butchers. (as documented in the Old Testament), The Iranian Achaemenid Empire was actually the most enlightened tolerant ancient empire until the Christian Western Empire (Byzantine), though it was probably suffering from corruption by this time. Darius was portrayed as a fat, brutal slob. He was never portrayed this way in ancient images or descriptions (even by Greeks). Alexander's motives were portrayed as noble. Darius was portrayed as the evil threat to western civilization, again! Not to belabor the point but Antigonus was not murdered but survived Alexander to found the huge Hellenistic Antigonid dynasty. Alexander's married three Iranian women; Roxana (his true love) and the Persian princesses Stateira & Parysatis. There is no historical evidence for the murder plot of Attalus & Caranus or the battle portrayed in the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review kevin w Underrated teevee movie about no less than the conqueror of the world, begins with auspicious headline casting and some battle scenes of note. Bill Shatner, in the days before fame came whispering "immortality" to the impressionable and innocent youth, does well heading the thing, standing alongside of heavyweights like Joe Cotton and John Cassavetes (right after he did The Dirty Dozen), and so quit your infantile snickering. How could this not be amazing! Too bad after this fell through the Shat went on to some silly scifi called Star Trek. He coulda had a career here.
